Sumner is a quiet neighborhood in a great location

Sumner is a small residential neighborhood in west Claremont. Bracketed to the north by Foothill Freeway and to the south by Foothill Boulevard, Claremont’s main retail corridor, residents of the neighborhood enjoy easy access to commuting routes and shopping. “Convenient is probably the first word I’d use,” says real estate advisor and Claremont native Ben Nance of Sotheby’s International. “You’ve got modern shopping centers on the south side, it’s easy to get around town, and you’re not too far from the mountains if you want to go hiking. It’s a very balanced neighborhood.”

The local housing market is dominated by midcentury ranch-style homes, though there are a few more modern fill-in properties in the neighborhood. The local streets are gridded, and most are lined with shade trees, well-maintained sidewalks and manicured lawns. Backyard pools are very common, as are views of the nearby San Gabriel Mountains. Most homes in the neighborhood sell for between $880,000 and $1.4 million.

The stretch that passes by Sumner is home to a variety of big-box stores and restaurants, as well as both Stater Bros. and Superior Grocers supermarkets. “It’s easy to get your shopping done,” says Nance. “Basically, anything you might want is a mile or two away at most.” There is a broad spectrum of cuisines available in the area, including highly rated eateries like Thai Orchid Garden, Patty’s Mexican Food and Eddie’s Italian Eatery. A more walkable shopping and dining experience can be found at Claremont Village, the city’s vibrant downtown area.
