Suburban living with an active community center in Claremont
Outlined by Meadow Brook and Gully Brook while bordering the Connecticut River, Maple Avenue District is a peaceful neighborhood in the city of Claremont. The community is home to Maple Avenue Elementary School and is next door to the popular Moody Park, making it a convenient setting for families with young children. The city’s recreation center, complete with adult and youth programs and events, provides ample athletic, fitness and outdoor opportunities, while big-box stores and restaurants are right across the Sugar River. With major Upper Valley employers such as Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Hypertherm about 30 miles away, Maple Avenue District offers residents a relaxing, convenient environment for balancing life and work. “One of the bad boys here is the high tax rate,” says James Shibles, a Claremont local and Realtor at Covered Bridge RE with nine years of experience. “Claremont is upgrading, and the city is building parks, community centers, schools and creating more entertainment spaces; taxes make this stuff and improvements happen.”

A robust recreation scene in Claremont
Moody Park, across the river from the neighborhood and on the southern banks of Gully Brook, features 325 acres of outdoor space with hiking and biking trails, tennis courts, a playground and a disc golf course. The parkland was donated by Claremont native William H. H. Moody, a wealthy businessman who wanted the space to be enjoyed by the public for free. To this day, residents can book the park’s picnic pavilions for private parties and events at no cost. The Claremont Country Club is several blocks away and has open tee times for the public. Monadnock Park, which is 2 miles east of the neighborhood, has soccer and softball fields for local youth leagues to practice and play. About a block south, the Claremont Savings Bank Community Center offers extensive fitness lessons. Here, city residents can become members and take a variety of classes, including water aerobics, dance, yoga and personal training. The center also has two indoor pools, a fitness center with cardio and weight equipment, a walking track and a gymnasium for volleyball, basketball and pickleball. “One of the big highlights in Claremont is the community center,” says Justin Martin, who is the assistant director and superintendent of recreation programs at the city’s park department. “It’s the whole nine yards and sets Claremont apart from other communities.” The park department also organizes adult, youth and family recreational programs such as fishing and kayaking trips.
