You’ve got the river out there,” says DJ Chabot, a Realtor with Town and Country Realty, who grew up in Claremont. “There’s no noise except for a few cows. It’s country living close to downtown.”

Biking and skiing at Arrowhead Recreation Area
Whether seeking a relaxing time in nature or a thrilling adventure, Puckershire offers various ways to enjoy the outdoors. Located on Flatrock Hill, the 185-acre Arrowhead Recreation Area is a popular spot for extreme sports. “Mountain biking has really taken off there. It’s some of the highest-rated biking trails,” Chabot says. The area offers skiing and tubing in the winter. Cross-country skiers, hikers and mountain bikers find thrills and serenity among the tall pines in Moody Park, featuring multiuse trails that meander through the forest. It also offers a challenging 18-hole disc golf course. Those who prefer traditional golfing can tee off at Claremont Country Club, featuring a public 9-hole course. For an afternoon of fishing, boating and kayaking along the Connecticut River, a community boat launch is roughly 7 miles west. The Bobby Woodman Rail Trail offers bikers, walkers and runners an off-street path from the city's center to the neighboring town of Newport. NASCAR lovers pack the stands year-round at Claremont Motorsports Park.

Farmhouses and Cape Cods with mountain views
Chabot notes that home prices also draw buyers to the area. The average price for a Puckershire home is $225,927, below the Claremont-Lebanon Metro Area average of $328,907. Single-family homes rest along two-lane country roads that pass by swaths of forest and patches of farmland. Mountains rise in the distance, providing scenic views. Buyers will find Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals, farmhouses, barn-style homes and cabins built between the 1800s and early 2000s. Although the average interior square footage of most homes here is 1,290 square feet, these homes feature spacious lawns, typically well over an acre. Many of these large lots are sloped and feature fields and barns. Properties range in price from $235,000 to $450,000. There are also communities of manufactured homes, which start under $100,000 and can cost up to $215,000. Potential buyers should note that properties come with private wells and septic tanks.

Art, history and entertainment in downtown Claremont
The neighborhood sits a few miles outside the city center and is even closer to the retail corridor along Washington Street. The largest town in Sullivan County, Claremont hosts big-name retailers, including Walmart Supercenter, Hobby Lobby and Harbor Freight Tools. The stores are a big draw for people living in smaller villages outside the city. Puckershire is less than 5 miles from Claremont Marketplace, a shopping center anchored by Market Basket, T.J. Maxx and Claremont Cinema 6. Chabot says local shops and restaurants are found in the converted mill buildings downtown. Leo's One-Stop Market is the longtime mom-and-pop grocer drawing in shoppers for its sandwiches and potato salad. A red barn-like building is home to the Barn Café, a relaxed spot for brunch. “Everything is homemade. They’ve got great cold cuts and quiche,” Chabot says. At The Common Man Restaurant, diners enjoy views of the Sugar River rushing over rapids. Residents head to Opera House Square for an evening out, featuring popular bars, such as Taverne on the Square and CrowBar Hardware Store, and the historic Claremont Opera House. “We have a great thriving theater and music scene. The Opera House puts on different shows and productions,” Chabot says.

Maple Avenue School in Claremont has an overall grade of C on Niche.
Inspiring a love of nature at Claremont Middle
School Administrative Unit 6, or SAU 6, is the public school district serving Claremont students. Puckershire children are zoned for Maple Avenue Elementary. Earning a C rating from Niche, the school cultivates a love of reading through weekly trips to the school library. The C-rated Claremont Middle offers an Explore the Outdoors Club, which teaches students how to build a shelter in the woods and identify trees and plants. Stevens High, located in the bustling downtown Claremont, receives a C-minus. The red brick school, dating to the 1860s, does not have athletic fields on campus, so student-athletes practice across the street at the expansive Monadnock Park. The closest private options are Claremont Christian Academy, earning a C, and Kimball Union Academy, an A-plus-rated boarding school with day students. River Valley Community College, known for its nursing and accounting programs, is in northern Claremont. The Ivy League’s Dartmouth College is about 29 miles north of the city in Hanover.
The annual Stevens High School Alumni Parade
Established in 1871, Stevens High School is known as America's oldest continuously active alumni association. School spirit permeates the city during its annual Alumni Weekend. Held each June, it culminates with a big parade through downtown Claremont featuring dozens of floats. “You graduate on Friday, and the next day, you wake up, and you’re in the parade,” says Chabot, a Stevens High alumnus. Chabot adds that the parade is a big social event where people reminisce and reconnect.
Daily commutes start on Washington Street
Like most of Western New Hampshire, Puckershire is a car-dependent community. Residents can take Chestnut Street to reach downtown, which is about 3 miles away. Chabot says that while most people work in the city, some commute north or west to Newport and Lebanon. “Many people are willing to travel up to half an hour for work,” Chabot says. Residents have quick access to Washington Street, or State Route 103, a major east-west thoroughfare that connects to Interstate 91. Charlestown Road, or State Route 11, is nearby to get to destinations south of the city. Southwestern Community Services operates a bus service in Claremont that stops at destinations, including Opera House Square and Valley Regional Hospital. The closest stop for Puckershire residents is at Market Basket. Residents can catch an Amtrak train at Claremont Station or board a flight to Boston at Lebanon Municipal Airport, about 25 miles away.
