Convenient suburban living in Claremont
South End is an expansive Claremont neighborhood between the Connecticut River and the Sugar River. The community is home to the popular Moody Park and close to the city’s public schools, making it a convenient and ideal place for families to settle. The city’s recreation center and Monadnock Park are also close by, providing even more outdoor and fitness opportunities. While some businesses are in the area, people usually visit Washington and Pleasant Streets for restaurants and retailers. Interstate 91 is west of the area, which makes it relatively simple to get to major employers such as Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in the Upper Valley.
Idyllic homes in South End
Area houses come in various architectural styles, ranging from cottages, Cape Cods and ranch styles, to Colonial Revivals, raised ranches, traditional farmhouses and New England-style homes. While some residences date back to the mid-1800s, most were built after the 1950s. Single-family homes between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet are usually listed for about $200,000 to $350,000, and those around 2,500 square feet can go up to $450,000. Homebuyers can also find sprawling country estates with up to 10 acres of land fetching around $700,000, and many have amenities such as outdoor pools and tennis courts right on the property. These houses are often located farther south of the town center, comfortably spread apart with large multi-acre lots that have barns and private woods. Homes closer to Moody Park have smaller quarter-acre to half-acre yards on gridded streets with sidewalks, and the roads narrow deeper into the countryside. “South End is more for plain suburban and rural living,” says James Shibles, a local Realtor at Covered Bridge RE with 9 years of experience. “Houses have large lot sizes and are more spread out. There are also working farms and businesses like car dealerships and auto shops in the area. Developers also like the undeveloped leftover farmland beside the river.”
Recreation opportunities at public parks and rec center
South End is home to the popular Moody Park, a 325-acre outdoor space donated by William H. H. Moody in 1917, featuring hiking trails such as the Moody Trail and a playground for children. Residents can also play disc golf or a tennis match by using the park’s recreational amenities. The private Claremont Country Club's nine-hole golf course sits adjacent to Moody Park and offers some public tee times. Less than 2 miles east, Monadnock Park has several big sports fields often used by local leagues. Right next door, the Claremont Savings Bank Community Center provides residents with dance and personal training classes. Its indoor pools are open year-round to members or those who have passes, and the center offers water aerobics lessons. The gymnasium and walking track are utilized for a variety of sports such as basketball, pickleball and volleyball.
Claremont School District
South End is served by the Claremont School District, which has a student-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. Maple Avenue Elementary School has weekly art, music, physical education and technology classes and organizes special events such as a back to school festival and a Halloween Parade. Claremont Middle School offers a variety of athletic teams, from track and field to football, soccer and hockey. Stevens High School partners with local universities, such as Dartmouth College, to provide students with dual-enrollment courses and academic enrichment experiences. The high school also has mandatory community service requirements for graduating students, and all three schools have a C Niche grade. River Valley Community College has a campus in Claremont, and the leading Ivy League institution, Dartmouth College is about 31 miles away.
Restaurants in Downtown Claremont
One of the town’s main thoroughfares, Pleasant Street, runs through the neighborhood and is dotted with cafes and restaurants such as Tremont House of Pizza, which has been in business since 1978. Another popular pizzeria, Ramunto’s Brick Oven Pizza is by the Sugar River. People can find various grocery and big-box stores along Washington Street, including Walmart, Market Basket and Hannaford.
Proximity to Hanover
Interstate 91 is west of South End, and people can take the highway for access to Hanover and other towns in the Upper Valley area. Even though Claremont Municipal Airport is just north of the community, people usually go to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, about 75 miles east, for commercial flights. Valley Regional Hospital is approximately 3 miles north in the North End neighborhood, and the area is very car-dependent.
Events in Claremont
Claremont is an active town with many community events and festivities. People celebrate the fall festival with a chili cook-off, and there are also holiday parties and evening activities, such as open-mic or movie night. Traditions in town include a father-daughter dance in February and an egg hunt. The local recreation department also provides opportunities to travel to other New England cities for day trips or sports games.
