Suburban living in the upper Connecticut River Valley

The Sugar River winds through the West Side of Claremont, leading past residential streets and a vibrant city center where former textile mills sit next to local shops and restaurants. While those historic mill buildings have been converted into mixed-use developments, the city embraces its rich history alongside its bustling downtown and lush green spaces. “There’s a lot of mill materials, and the whole town still has a flavor of that. You’ve got an awful lot of mechanics and people who do precision machine work. That’s still a strength of the area,” says Dakin Burdick, President of the Claremont Historical Society. Tucked in the upper Connecticut River Valley, Claremont has become a destination for residents seeking a small-town environment with affordable housing and easy access to the rest of the region. “I was renting up in Lebanon for many years, but I decided to look around and buy in Claremont. It’s more affordable compared to some of those other towns,” says James Shibles, a Realtor with Covered Bridge Real Estate with over nine years of experience in the industry. “It’s also a main route to get to Interstate 91. Claremont is a great place for quick access to all the big sites.”

Local shops and restaurants in downtown Claremont

Residents are about a mile from Claremont’s city center, where a rotary-style town square connects Washington Street, Broad Street, Main Street and Pleasant Street. Also known as downtown Claremont, the city center is a hot spot for shopping and dining. Spice blends and locally roasted coffee fill the shelves at Claremont Spice & Dry Goods, while Violet’s Book Exchange sells new and used books. Over on Main Street are the old Monadnock Mills, and the Common Man Restaurant serves American classics from a historic textile mill. Its patio boasts panoramic views of the Sugar River, and the restaurant hosts live music all summer long. Other local favorites include The Barn Café, known for its fresh pastries and sandwiches. Checkered tablecloths are a staple at Ramunto’s Brick Oven Pizza, a casual spot known for its New York-style pies and Italian specialties. Chain retailers can be found along Washington Street, which is about 2 miles from the West Side. Residents have access to Walmart, Home Depot and Hannaford for groceries.

Concerts, farmers market and parades in Broad Street Park

Claremont’s city center is anchored by Broad Street Park, a triangular green space with a bandstand, walking paths and several monuments honoring soldiers who served in the Korean War, Vietnam War and World War II. Local bands perform at the park’s bandstand each Thursday night from June to August, while the Claremont Farmers Market brings fresh produce to residents from June to October. The green space also hosts seasonal festivities put on by the Claremont Parks and Recreation Department, including the annual Hallowesta parade and winter holiday lights display.

The West Side features traditional 19th-century homes

Most homes in the West Side were built from the late 19th century through the mid-1900s. “Directly west, you’ll find plain regular suburban houses,” Shibles says. Dutch Colonial Revivals, American Foursquares and Cape Cod-style homes sit side-by-side along tree-lined streets. Most houses offer attached or detached garages, and lots average about a quarter acre. Sprawling ranch-style homes can be found on secluded cul-de-sacs, with some properties offering several acres of land. Prices for single-family homes range from around $200,000 to $350,000. Closer to the city center is The Way School Condominium Association, which offers one- and two-bedroom units selling for $150,00 to $230,000. Because of the community’s proximity to the Sugar River, there is a risk of flooding for homes that sit along the water.

Nature trails, playground and disc-golf course at Moody Park

Moody Park is less than 3 miles south. A canopy of mature trees shades its expansive trail network, which is suitable for hikers, mountain bikers and cross-country skiers. “Moody Park is also a mecca for dogs. A lot of people walk their dogs up and down those trails,” Shibles says. The green space also features a playground and an 18-hole disc golf course. Next to Moody Park is the Claremont Country Club, a semi-private club whose 9-hole golf course is open to both members and non-members. A bit further east, the Arrowhead Recreation Area provides access to Flatrock Hill, which stands at 1,080 feet tall and is a popular destination for alpine skiing, snow tubing and snowboarding throughout the winter months. Residents can also head about 10 miles north to Mount Ascutney, which features over 12 miles of hiking trails and scenic vistas of the Connecticut River Valley. Back in downtown Claremont, residents have access to a growing arts district. The Claremont Opera House is an Italian Renaissance Revival-style building dating back to the late 19th century, and the venue hosts everything from weekly trivia nights to family-friendly theatre productions. Next door is the West Claremont Center for Music and the Arts, which offers art studios, rehearsal spaces and educational programming for all ages. The West Side is also home to the Claremont History Museum, which is open each Saturday throughout the summer and documents the town’s rich history. “Our collection goes back to the 1600s. We’ve got over 100 pieces of taxidermy, including golden eagles and bald eagles,” Burdick says. “The town has been really good about donating materials. A lot of people who come in now are children or grandchildren of the people who have donated.”
