Although humorist Will Rogers was born on a ranch outside Oologah, Oklahoma, he referred to the nearby town of Claremore as his birthplace because, as he put it, “nobody but an Indian can pronounce Oologah.” Claremore’s 20,000 residents are happy to claim “Oklahoma’s Favorite Son” as one of their own. Located within the Cherokee Nation, the Tulsa suburb also retains a significant Native American presence. “The best thing about [Claremore] is the people,” says Ashley May, director of communications for the Claremore Chamber of Commerce. “Claremore has the strongest sense of community spirit I have ever experienced. Everyone gets involved in making it a better place to live.” Several museums and a burgeoning downtown offer plenty to keep residents busy, even as Claremore represents a quiet alternative to Tulsa. “If you want a place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city, Claremore is the place,” says Dustin Moseley, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty Preferred.

Antiques and thrift stores in the Lilac District
In 2021, the city dubbed the downtown area the Lilac District in honor of Claremore native Lynn Riggs, a playwright whose play “Green Grow the Lilacs” was the basis for the musical “Oklahoma!” Antique and thrift stores and locally owned restaurants crowd the brick buildings, many painted with vibrant murals. Seasonal events, like the Dickens on the Boulevard Christmas celebration, regularly enliven the four-block area.
