A fast-growing community framed by natural spaces

Expansive parks offering acres of forests, meadows and lakes can be found on all sides of the northern Montgomery County community of Clarksburg, making the longer commute into Washington, D.C. worth it for residents looking for a more relaxed lifestyle. “You have access to all of the major throughways to D.C. and Baltimore, a great school system, modern roads and easy access to amenities,” says Lisa Sabelhaus, a Realtor with RE/MAX Town Center who has served the area for 19 years. Though the suburban community is smaller than those closer to the city, it offers plenty of retail shopping, restaurants and community activities.

Subdivision of newly built townhouses

“Clarksburg is one of the few areas in Montgomery County that offers a lot of new construction areas mixed in with old established neighborhoods and wide-open spaces,” Sabelhaus says. Though newer developments are more common, homebuyers can find Colonial Revivals built in the 1980s on larger lots priced around $850,000. Communities developed in the last 15 years feature neat rows of townhouses that appear in similar Colonial Revival designs and cost between $400,000 and $600,000. Newly built New Traditional houses usually have small yards but boast five or six bedrooms and are priced between $700,000 and $850,000.

Hike, boat or fish at Black Hills Regional Park

From pocket parks connected by the Clarksburg Greenway Trail to expansive regional parks, residents have plenty of opportunities to get outdoors. Situated beside the Little Seneca Lake system, Black Hills Regional Park offers a playground and dog park, along with a beach volleyball court and waterside nature trails. On warm days, residents can rent a paddleboard or kayak to explore the water or take a boat out to go fishing. Locals can head to Little Bennett Regional Park for an adventurous staycation at the campground or take a picnic to explore the park’s 14 historical sites and 3700 acres of forests and wetlands. The community also isn’t far from the natural, open spaces throughout Montgomery County. “Whether you’re heading out for a hike at Sugarloaf Mountain or going to Hagerstown for some white water rafting or tubing, you can do it all,” Sabelhaus says.

Clarksburg Tavern serves up burgers and beer

Residents can begin their day with a breakfast sandwich and a cup of coffee from Gateway Café and enjoy nachos from Villa Maya for lunch. In the evenings, locals can gather at Clarksburg Tavern to play pool, have a beer and dig into classic American fare. Commuters merge onto I-270

There are some bus stops operated by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation scattered throughout the area, but most of Clarksburg is car-dependent. Rail lines don’t run through Clarksburg, so residents must drive 10 miles southeast to board the MARC in Gaithersburg or 12 miles southeast to catch the Metro at the Shady Grove station in Derwood. Interstate 270 bisects the community, allowing residents to conveniently travel 30 miles southeast to Washington, D.C. and 17 miles northwest to Frederick.

Go strawberry picking at Butler’s Orchard

People living around Washington, D.C. often head to northern Montgomery County for a taste of slower-paced living among its lush open spaces, but Clarksburg residents are under 10 miles away from popular weekend activities. Locals can enjoy wine flights and live music at the Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard or head to Butler’s Orchard for seasonal attractions. The orchard hosts a petting zoo and strawberry picking in the summer and fields of sunflowers in late August. Residents can return as temperatures drop for a fall festival, complete with a corn maze and pumpkin patch, and then cut down their own pine tree for the holiday season.
