Clay will have you waking up every morning to Lancaster County’s picturesque rural countryside, with the relaxing ambiance of sprawling farmland and the distant Appalachian Mountains.

“It’s the epitome of Lancaster County,” says Susan Allison, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “The countryside is stunningly beautiful. And it’s the kind of place you can buy fresh eggs from a farm stand on the side of the road.”

Farms surround pockets of housing developments giving this beautiful country town a touch of suburban living. The developments were completed in the early 2000s, featuring various craftsman-style homes with two-car garages. Large contemporary town houses and duplexes range from $250,000 to $300,000. A single-story home with 1,500 square feet of living space sells for around $350,000 to $400,000. If you need more space, you can get a 3,000-square-foot, two-story home with four bedrooms starting at $400,000 and selling for up to $500,000. Each home comes with a back deck, some offering stunning views of cornfields just inches from your yard. Other parts of Clay feature a variety of single-family homes from the mid-to-late 1900s, such as Cape Cods, colonials and ranch-style houses with spacious one-acre yards. These sell for anywhere from $350,000 to $450,000.

Route 322 runs through the heart of Clay, providing easy access to a few shops, restaurants and farmer’s markets. Start your morning at Stonehouse Café with a latte in the restaurant’s rustic, yet chic atmosphere. Later, stop by Pepe’s for a pizza, cheesesteak or wings, among other Italian-American eats. When you’re ready for dessert, visit Fox Meadows Creamery and try the famous hand-crafted ice cream made from its on-site dairy farm. Enjoy your treat in the cozy outdoor seating area while kids play on the playground. While you’re there, be sure to check out the country market to shop for local products. You’ll find more fresh fruits, vegetables and canned goods at Horst Produce. Or you can stop by Sharp Shopper Grocery Outlet, which has been selling discounted closeout products since 1988.

Soak in more of the beautiful farm views at Snyder Park as you go for a stroll along the paved walkway. Gather with friends and family to celebrate a special occasion under the pavilion beside the playground, where kids can run around and burn energy. The park is also frequently filled with loved ones cheering on children playing sports through Ephrata Youth Soccer Club and Lancaster County Youth Baseball.

When playtime is over, kids attend Clay Elementary School, located right next to the park. They go on to Ephrata Middle and Senior High School. Each school boasts a B to B+ rating from Niche. The high school is ranked the seventh-best public high school of 17 in the Lancaster area. It’s also rated above the state average regarding college readiness, according to GreatSchools.

It’s about a 15-mile scenic drive through beautiful open farmland to get to the City of Lancaster. You’ll likely have to pass a tractor or horse and buggy every now and then, but that’s all part of living in Lancaster County’s Amish Country. Those seeking a laid-back lifestyle in a town that blends a rural and suburban atmosphere will find Clay to be a wonderful place to settle down.
