Quiet, urban living in a central Clearwater location
Twenty-two miles west of Tampa, Clearwater North East is an urban community offering apartments, condos and single-family homes in a quiet, central location. “You will find different types of restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies and shopping areas all over,” says Consuelo Miehl, a real estate agent with Realty Experts who has lived in Florida for over 20 years. “It’s convenient and it’s more affordable than downtown St. Petersburg and Tampa.” Clearwater Beach is 4 miles away, and local buses make it easy to get around. “We can shop around the corner, but we don’t have the stress or traffic of a big city,” Miehl says.
Modest condos and single-family homes
Most residents here are renters in apartment and condo buildings like Mainstreet Apartments, Avalon at Clearwater and the 55-plus Sunshine Towers with shared amenities like heated pools and fitness centers. Condos are from the late 20th century through the early 2000s with less than 1,000 square feet and features like assigned parking, balconies and in-unit laundry. Monthly condo association dues range from about $400 to $600, which go toward community upkeep.
There are also a handful of mid-century Craftsman-style and block homes set along narrow, sidewalk-lined streets peppered with a mix of palm, oak and pine trees. Homes are generally under 2,000 square feet with modest lawns, attached garages or uncovered driveways and occasional features like covered patios and private pools. Condo prices range from $100,000 to $250,000, while single-family home prices range from $250,000 to $550,000—both ranges depending on the property's size and features. The median price here is $225,000, compared to $475,000 in both Tampa and St. Petersburg.
Shopping and dining at Clearwater Plaza
For daily essentials, Clearwater Plaza is just outside of the neighborhood with over two dozen shops and restaurants, including a Publix for groceries. “We have a lot of restaurants around the area—European, American, Hispanic,” Miehl says. Residents might start their morning with hot tea from Machi Boba or brunch at Our Place, a laidback diner with comfort classics like chicken ‘n’ waffles, chocolate chip pancakes and all-day bottomless mimosas. For a quick meal, Tacos El Carnal is a food truck with street tacos, quesadillas and birria, while China 1 is across the street for takeout staples like shrimp fried rice, mapo tofu and sweet and sour chicken. Nearby, Abe's Place Tap & Grill offers a social setting to enjoy the game with beer on tap.
Sunsets at Pier 60
Four miles away at Clearwater Beach, Sunsets at Pier 60 is a daily tradition that begins two hours before sunset and continues two hours after. As the sky shifts from pastel blue to deep shades of orange, red and pink, local artisans sell handmade goods, musicians perform and street entertainers wow crowds with fire-eating, stilt-walking and magic tricks.
Pinellas County Schools receive high marks from Niche
Clearwater North East is part of Pinellas County Schools, rated A-minus overall and ranked the top school district in the Tampa area by Niche. Local kids may start at Belleair Elementary, before moving to Largo Middle—both rated B-minus. Home of the Tornadoes, the B-rated Clearwater High offers dual-enrollment classes for college credit at St. Petersburg College and Pinellas Technical College. Kids in kindergarten through Grade 12 may also attend the A-minus-rated Clearwater Academy International, a private, Scientologist school.
Sports, fishing and the beach nearby
Less than a mile away, Ed Wright Park is the local go-to for bass fishing in Lake Belleview, family barbecues and sports like pickleball, horseshoe and tennis. Next to the park and lake, the Ross Norton Recreation Center is the spot to hit the gym, play basketball or cool off in the community pool. Nearby, the 47-mile, shared-use Pinellas Trail stretches from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. “People like to bike ride or run through the trail,” Miehl says. “You’ll see landscapes, cross through some neighborhoods—it’s a nice trail.” Birders on the trail can try and spot local avians like European starlings, purple martins and eastern bluebirds. For a beach trip, Clearwater Beach is 4 miles away, offering powdery white sands, turquoise blue water and everything from jet skiing and parasailing to beachfront restaurants and mini golf.
Getting around from Clearwater North East
U.S. Route 19 borders Clearwater North East, leading 21 miles south to St. Petersburg; Tampa is 22 miles away via nearby State Route 60. Streets are lined with sidewalks and Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus stops, and the Jolley Trolley also stops in the neighborhood. The area’s considered bikeable, though there aren’t any bike lanes. Morton Plant Hospital is less than a mile away, and St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport is 10 miles away.
Environmental concerns
Clearwater North East isn’t considered a flood zone, but in 2024, Clearwater was impacted by Hurricane Milton. “Some of the beaches are still closed after the hurricane, but we are recovering very fast,” Miehl says. “We are very resilient and are rebuilding.” Flood insurance here is recommended, but not required.
