Deed-restricted community in Clearwater’s Countryside area
Northwood is a deed-restricted neighborhood in the Countryside area of northern Clearwater. “It’s a mid-sized city setting, for sure. It’s not like Tampa, where it’s really crazy, but it is still definitely a city vibe,” says Coldwell Banker’s Kirsten Kelley, a Realtor with over a decade of experience. The community is a mix of condos and single-family homes on quiet, tree-lined streets close to Countryside Mall, Countryside Sports Complex and Lake Chautauqua Park. “It’s very Florida. We have these major urban areas surrounded by awesome, beautiful parks. Everything is in one small space: residential, commercial buildings, parks. It’s an interesting dynamic, and that’s the draw,” Kelley says.
1980s condos and single-family homes
Classic ranch-style homes and angular, Contemporary bungalows with dramatic rooflines are common. Most have attached garages, neat front lawns and fenced-in backyards. Prices start at close to $420,000 and rise to around $800,000. Condos in boxy, several-story buildings typically sell for between $115,000 and $250,000. Some complexes, like Imperial Pines, are age-restricted 55-plus communities with amenities like clubhouses and outdoor pools. Northwood’s inland location lessens the risk of flooding, but wind damage is a concern during hurricane season.
Countryside High offers ISTEM magnet, dual associate degree programs
Pinellas County Schools, including Lelia Davis Elementary, Safety Harbor Middle and Countryside High, serve Northwood kids. Lelia Davis gets an A-minus from Niche, while Safety Harbor and Countryside get Bs. The high school offers a dual associate degree program called Cougar University and the Institute for Science, Technology Engineering & Mathematics magnet program. ISTEM concentrations include biotechnology, cybersecurity and digital design, among others.
Close to Northwood Plaza, Countryside Mall retailers and restaurants
Northwood Park is a shady neighborhood playground with a multiuse field. Enterprise Dog Park, nearby, has walking trails, picnic areas and dog water fountains. Fishing is available on Lake Chautauqua, about a mile away. The surrounding park also has hiking trails. Public golf courses at Countryside Country Club and Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club are just north of the neighborhood, near Countryside Sports Complex, which hosts Clearwater, Pinellas and Safety Harbor youth athletics.
Close to Northwood Plaza, Countryside Mall retailers and restaurants
Countryside Mall has over 100 stores, a movie theater and dining options like Bacon Street Diner, a casual, family-owned American spot. The indoor mall is less than 2 miles from Northwood. Surrounding commercial corridors feature big box retailers and fast-food chains, from HomeGoods and Dick’s Sporting Goods to Chick-fil-A and Chipotle. Shopping centers on McMullen Booth Road have more retailers, including Publix, Talbots and Dollar General. The Little Lamb Gastropub is known for its global menu and stylish presentation, while Norton’s Eastside Sports Bar does casual bar fare.
Getting around north Pinellas County
U.S. Route 19 runs north through Palm Harbor and south to St. Petersburg. The highway is near the mall, a couple miles away. Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus stops are scattered along main roads in and around Northwood, including McMullen Booth Road and Main Street. Also known as State Road 580, Main Street runs west to Mease Dunedin Hospital and downtown Dunedin, about 5 miles away. Mease Countryside Hospital is closer, less than 3 miles north. St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is a straight shot south across Old Tampa Bay. The nearly 9-mile drive takes 15 minutes with no traffic.
