Equivalent to a small college town
Named after Central Avenue, which serves as the neighborhood’s northern border, Central is only 2 miles from downtown Cleveland and near Interstates 90 and 77. Central is also close to the campus of Cleveland State University. In addition, Cuyahoga Community College has a campus in the neighborhood. “In a way, it’s kind of like a small college town because there are many commuters that live in the neighborhood,” says Cain D’Amico, a Realtor with Lokal Real Estate, LLC; he’s a native Clevelander who’s been in the business a little over a year.

The neighborhood has been around since the 1800s and has housing that goes back that far. However, many homes have been demolished and rebuilt with a nod to some classic architecture. “They’ve been mainly rebuilt as nice colonials over the last 30 years,” D’Amico says. “People started buying properties hoping for student tenants, improving the neighborhood.” Ninety-three percent of those living in the neighborhood are renters. The price range of the houses is between $100,000 and $200,000, with the homes built in the last 30 years still falling within that range. Cape Cods and Colonial Revival are the primary styles of homes. There are even some late 19th-century houses that are still standing. Most have three to four bedrooms and between 1,200 and 2,500 square feet.
The neighborhood has a CAP index crime score of 10. Over the past two decades, various charitable organizations have tried to help this area with affordable housing and improving educational opportunities. The neighborhood still sees challenges.
