Duck Island trades bootleggers for bike lanes
Situated between Tremont, Ohio City and downtown Cleveland, Duck Island is neither an island nor a sanctuary for waterfowl. The name, according to locals, refers to the act of “ducking,” or hiding, from the law. “During the Prohibition Era, this was where a lot of criminals and people that were doing things under the radar would come and hide out from law enforcement,” says Keith Tisch, a Realtor with Howard Hanna and a Duck Island resident. Today, people sit openly in the beer garden at the neighborhood brewery and run local trails for fun — not to escape a crime scene. Newly constructed townhomes dominate the market, which has fundamentally changed the housing landscape in a short period of time. “Duck Island has transformed over the years,” Tisch says. “It has definitely become one of the most desired neighborhoods to live in for young professionals and empty nesters.”
Duck Island locals have easy access to Ohio City, Tremont, and Lake Erie.

Walking distance to Ohio City's restaurant scene
Residents meet up at Forest City Brewery within the neighborhood. The institution pre-dates Prohibition, and has a popular shaded beer garden and a full calendar of diverse music acts and swing dance sessions. Velvet Tango Room is another Duck Island favorite, with craft cocktails and a speakeasy vibe that harkens back to the neighborhood’s historic origins.
Ohio City’s hub of restaurants, bars and small businesses are just a couple blocks away. West Side Market is a major attraction operating since the early 1900s. The indoor marketplace has fresh and prepared foods and locally made goods. More groceries can be found at Dave’s Markets, a regional chain. Great Lakes Brewing Company is well-loved for craft beer and has a globally inspired menu. Tabletop Board Game Café has a wall of games to play over a sandwich or glass of wine. Many strolls down 25th Street include a stop at Mitchell’s Ice Cream, housed in a renovated movie theater. The bright marquee advertises vegan options and rotating seasonal flavors.
Locals from Duck Island often head to Forest City Brewery for craft beer and to socialize.

New townhomes make this a hot Cleveland market
Duck Island’s new construction starkly contrasts the neighborhood’s original 1800s National-style homes. There are few of these fixer-uppers left, mostly attracting investors, selling between $100,000 and $425,000. Otherwise, buyers will find a wealth of contemporary-style condos built in the past 20 years and townhomes constructed in the last 10 years. Prices can range from $160,000 for a one-bedroom unit up to $660,000 for three bedrooms.
Well maintained National-style houses in Duck Island preserve the neighborhood's history.

A new playground for Abbey Park
Amid the brick and concrete, Abbey Park offers a green respite. The park features shaded picnic tables, a basketball court and a new playground opening in October 2024. Neighbors keep up the community garden and stock the little free library with children’s books.
Cyclists, walkers and runners can hop on the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail or the Centennial Lake Link Trail at Scranton Flats, a small waterfront park.
Just across the Cuyahoga River, a new 25-acre green space is expected to open in 2027. Irishtown Bend Park will connect existing mixed-use trails and commemorate the area’s Irish American history through outdoor exhibits.

RTA light rail a short walk away
Duck Island has a Walk Score of 72 out of 100, and cyclists can take advantage of bike lanes on Abbey Avenue and the Red Line Greenway Metroparks Trail, which connects to the Centennial Lake Link Trail. “I ride my bike every day,” Tisch says. “I like the convenience of being able to walk downtown to the baseball games and basketball games, being able to walk to Ohio City to grab a bite to eat.”
The red line of the Regional Transit Authority light rail conveniently stops within the neighborhood at W.25-Ohio City Station. Commuters can also hop on a bus on Abbey Avenue or easily get to Interstates 90 or 490. Downtown Cleveland is less than a 2-mile drive, accessible via Carnegie Avenue.
Taste of Tremont and other local events
Residents here can walk, bike or transit to events throughout Tremont, Ohio City and downtown. Local highlights include Taste of Tremont, an annual street festival celebrating the area’s vibrant restaurant scene. Each August, locals set up chairs and blankets at Lincoln Park to enjoy weekly performances from arts institutions such as the Ohio Contemporary Ballet and the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival. Lincoln Park also hosts the Tremont Farmers Market each Tuesday between May and October.

Neighbors meet to discuss crime, other Duck Island concerns
The neighborhood has an active block club that meets at Forest City Brewery monthly. The group discusses local concerns, including crime, and meetings often feature the police commissioner or the area’s city councilor. Duck Island has a crime score of 8 out of 10 on the CAP Index, above the national average of 4. However, Tisch says the feel of Duck Island has changed in recent years. “With all the new people that have moved into the neighborhood, it’s a lot safer,” he says.
