Bringing the Heisman home
Nestled in a bend on the Arkansas River, this community played a major part in the origin story of a Heisman Trophy winner, Billy Vessels. He is the namesake for the local park and stadium, and it is said that the community practically raised him after he stayed in Cleveland when his family left for Oklahoma City, getting odd jobs in town to pay bills until his time at the University of Oklahoma. To this day, his hometown of Cleveland remains focused on the people in its community, hosting annual events to bring everyone together, like the festivals along Broadway Street. “It has a lot of old historical buildings; they have a lot of little shops right there on the main street,” says Agent Darla Mills Brandon with OK Real Estate, a second-generation Realtor and area native. In addition to shopping trips, residents enjoy hunting and fishing within the Keystone Wildlife Management Area, which also calls the area home.

Comfort eats, local meats
Broadway Street has a classic main street lineup of local businesses, from family-owned Celebrations Floral and Gift shop, which organizes colorful arrangements of flowers, to Wild Country Meats, which processes wild game and sells freshly cut meats. At The Drip, locals start their days immersed in friendly conversation over a cup of coffee. In the afternoon, they can come back and share a pizza or go to Hickory House to step into the past at this old-fashioned diner, dishing out chicken fried steak and cinnamon rolls as large as a hand.

Parades and Pioneer Day
Along Broadway Street, residents celebrate the seasons. “There are pioneer days and parades each year in the spring and fall,” says Braxton Fears, Senior Managing Director for Capital Commercial Properties and co-owner of The Drip in town. Throughout the year, they can also join celebrations in nearby neighborhoods, like Pawnee County. “They have many parades close to Pawnee, where they have rodeos,” Brandon says.
Sheds and shaded yards
Mature trees multiply as residents approach their homes off Broadway Street. These homes come in an assortment of styles, common between the 1920s and 1980s, including ranch, Cape Cod and Foursquare. In addition to paved driveways, these homes feature flat yards with space to put a shed and a fence around for dogs to play. These homes range in price from $51,000 to $399,000, with the median price for a single-family of $141,000. While homes are never more than a mile walk away from the main road, sidewalks are scarce on these side streets, making it preferable to drive to the stores.

Fish, fowl and fairways
From the 9-hole greens on the Keystone Golf and Country Club, where the Cleveland High School golf team plays, to the cottonwood and willow forests found within the Keystone Wildlife Management Area, residents find themselves surrounded by natural beauty. The Arkansas River feeds the Keystone Lake within this wildlife area, providing a mix of fish, including bass and catfish, for residents wanting to cast a line and try their luck on the river’s edge. Off the water, Billy Vessels Park has been a town staple for generations, where local children enjoy the playground equipment and picnic facilities. This park is also equipped with baseball fields and tennis courts. By the river, Feyodi Creek State Park invites locals and RV campers staying at the site to enjoy the hiking trails, disc golf course, volleyball and river views.

At the crossroads in Cleveland
Wherever residents find themselves in Cleveland, whether enjoying a picnic in the park or shopping in town, they are less than a mile away from the town’s two major roads: Oklahoma State Highway 99 (Broadway Street) and U.S. Route 64 (Caddo Street). “The lake activities in the summer and the close proximity to downtown Tulsa, only 40 minutes, make this town a place people like to live and commute,” Fears says.
