Shopping hubs and quick commutes from Hazel

Hazel is a Clifton neighborhood offering single-family homes with quick access to shops and popular NJ Transit options. The city was incorporated in 1917 and has long served as a commercial hub for North Jersey and a bedroom community for The Big Apple. Clifton’s compact design also creates a tight-knit community that gathers for various events throughout the year. “It still feels like a small town even though Clifton is a larger city,” says Joseph Scotto, a sales associate with Century 21 Cedarcrest Realty, who’s been selling homes in the area since 2016.

Colonials and Cape Cods starting in the $450,000s

Most of Hazel’s homes were built in the early- to mid-1900s and feature colonial and Cape Cod designs. Houses are packed tightly together along the neighborhood’s gridded streets. Most have a driveway, and some come with an attached or detached garage. Properties tend to stay on the market for about a month and typically sell for $450,000 to $850,000.

Commuting via buses, I-80 or train

NJ Transit offers daily bus service from Hazel to several destinations, including the Broadway Bus Terminal in Paterson and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. “Bus stops are along several streets, so they’re pretty much walkable for everyone,” says Scotto. Garden State Parkway runs just south of the neighborhood, connecting to Interstate 80 for drives into the city. Clifton’s Train Station, located 2 miles south, runs to Hoboken Station, which has access to the PATH line that stops on 33rd Street in New York City. St. Joseph's University Medical Center is 2 miles north. The closest airport, Newark Liberty International, is 20 miles south.

Academies at Clifton High

Students may start at Clifton Public School 4, which gets a C-plus from Niche, before going to Christopher Columbus Middle, which also has a C-plus. Clifton High earns a B and features three separate academies for STEM, post-secondary careers and the visual arts. New Jersey also offers an Interdistrict Public School Choice Program, allowing students to attend schools outside of their district.

Community park, nearby reservations with trails

Main Memorial Park has served as a community hub for all of Clifton since it opened in 1917. The park is dotted with monuments, and it also offers tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a playground and a walking path around its pond. Just 5 miles north, Rifle Camp Park has a fenced dog park and an astronomical observatory. There were also renovations in 2024 that added a new playground and a picnic area at the top of the hill, providing views of Manhattan’s skyline on clear days. And right next to Rifle Camp, the Garret Mountain Reservation features three miles of hiking trails.
