Beachside living with generational families
The small town of Clinton sits on the shore of the Long Island Sound. “A lot of people grew up here,” says Jason Lafleur, Realtor with Coldwell Banker who grew up two towns over from Clinton. “And there’s a little bit of everything.” There’s not a whole lot of new housing, and generational families fill the town year-round. Clinton’s beachside location makes it a draw, especially during the summer. “The population doubles in the summertime,” says Lafleur. “But the shops, restaurants, they all stay open year-round.” With East Main Street running through the middle of the town, residential and commercial areas stretch into the surrounding areas, whether a sea-focused business on the Sound or a quiet street with homes disappearing into the woods.

Marinas, beaches and a dog park
Marinas and boat slips dot the landscape, and the smell of the ocean is a constant throughout the year. While the beach is open year-round, during the on-season at Clinton Town Beach, residents and non-residents must pay a parking fee for the day. A walking path for dogs allows them to experience the beach as well, but they are not allowed on the sand itself. When dogs want to run free, Bailey’s Dog Park is located within the Ethel Peters Recreation Complex area. The complex’s sprawling outdoor space makes room for football, softball and soccer players, along with a skatepark for all ages to practice on.

Beach homes sitting close together on the water
Homes in Clinton tend to begin around $60,000 to $196,000 for a manufactured home but most homes sell between $210,000 to $680,000 with beach homes reaching up to $3.75 million. Beach homes are a mixture of styles, from postmodern to Cape Cods to a custom-build that combine more than one home style. “There is some historical housing from the early 1800s, but the majority are older than that,” Lafleur says. There are also some 55 plus only communities in Clinton, where home prices for classic New England styles range from $1 to $2 million. Within town and closer to the water, homes tend to sit close to each other. The further inland residents go, the more space appears between homes and properties.

Some restaurants sit next to the harbor, like Rocky’s Aqua and Lobster Landing, once voted to have the best lobster rolls in Connecticut. “It’s a literal shack owned by this old Italian guy who moved there from Italy,” says Lafleur. “He catches the lobsters himself.” Patrons sit outside, bring their own drink and look out over Cedar Island and the Long Island Sound.
