Clinton's roots in agriculture

Named after a general who fought in the American Revolution, Clinton’s history dates back to the mid-1700s. With a population of just under 8,500 during the 2020 census, the small city is the center of Sampson County, mainly consisting of rural farmland. Agriculture is Clinton’s primary industry. Major crops include corn, cotton and wheat, as well as vegetables. Clinton also dabbles in agritourism with Hubb’s Farm’s over 10-acre maze and other seasonal activities. With the help of the Main Street America Program, Clinton is working to revitalize its downtown, which includes a series of events to bring the community together. "There are many opportunities to become engaged in the community — civic groups, churches, the arts, a good school system and community college," says Mary Rose, planning and development director of the city of Clinton.
