Exploring state parks in Penn Township

Penn Township, 24 miles from State College, is nestled between Brush Mountain and the ridges of Poe Valley State Park. Like many townships within the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Province, Penn’s central area is a patchwork of farmland interrupted by the gridded streets of local communities and boroughs bordered by state parks and mountain trails. Homes not attached to farmland are concentrated in Coburn, the only community in the township, and on the Poe Valley side of Penn Creek. For shopping and dining, residents usually head to Penns Valley Road and Millheim Borough at the base of Brush Mountain. Penn offers more space with a lower price tag, as well as access to nature and the urban amenities of State College.

Fly Fishing and tubing at Poe Paddy State Park

Fly fishing is a popular pastime in the township, and anglers head to Poe Paddy State Park to cast their lines in Poe Creek. During May and June, Poe Paddy and nearby Poe Valley State Park are swarmed by visitors from around the world during the green drake mayfly hatch. “Fish love mayflies,” says Kylie Orndorf, the environmental education specialist at Poe Valley State Park. “The fish go crazy for the mayflies, and people like the fish.” Poe Lake in Poe Valley and Penn’s Creek in Poe Paddy are popular summertime recreation areas. Visitors will kayak and fish in the warm waters of Poe Lake before heading to Poe Paddy for tubing in Penn’s Creek. “Poe Paddy is very well known for tubing,” says Orndorf. “Normally, you need two cars for tubing, one at the end of the lake and one at the start, but for Poe Paddy, it’s a one-car deal because it winds around the mountain's edge. You walk up the train tunnel and put the tube in Penn’s Creek. It loops around. It’s like a lazy river. We know people who do it all day long.” During the winter months, some residents stay active by taking fitness classes at the Penns Valley YMCA, or they head up to Tussey Mountain for skiing and snow tubing. Children can visit the playground at the Old Gregg School Community and Recreation Center, and in the summer months, they can cool off in Millheim Pool.

Commuters use Pennsylvania 45

Penn is car-dependent, and commuters use Pennsylvania 45 to reach State College and Pennsylvania 445 to cut across Brush Mountain. ATVs and snowmobiles may be driven on certain roads in Penn Township, provided appropriate licensing is obtained. This may make travel through the ridges of Poe Valley easier to access during the winter months. “These roads are not necessarily maintained in the winter,” says Orndorf. “In the winter, the first snow and ice storm make it difficult to access.” State College Regional Airport is 28 miles away, and Mount Nittany Medical Center is 21 miles away.

Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park, 11 miles away, is an underground cavern with 35 feet of water surrounded by 1,600 acres of farmland, which houses native wildlife, from mountain lions to horses. Tours of the cavern and wildlife park are offered year-round, and there are recurring specialty events and activities on the grounds. “We also offer the miner’s maze and gemstone panning,” says Jeanine Watson, the executive business director of Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park. “And, during the fourth quarter of 2024, we will be bringing back the Cave Rock Mountain Tours – private jeep tours over the Penn’s Cave Estate, including off-roading adventures.” During Halloween, Prospector Pete’s Miner’s Maze and the cavern tour get a spooky makeover, and patrons can listen to ghost stories while exploring the cave. Religious services are held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salem United Church of Christ, Calvary Penns Valley and others around the area.
