East Midtown is a walkable neighborhood near downtown Coeur d’Alene

East Midtown is a low-key residential neighborhood of Coeur d’Alene, just east of downtown, where pedestrian-friendly streets connect with local eateries and lakefront parks. “The best thing about it is the restaurants," says Realtor Darren Miller of Coldwell Banker Realty, who was born and raised in Coeur d’Alene. "There are some amazing places to eat over there on Sherman Avenue. There’s a new coffee shop, a breakfast spot and a couple of burger joints. You can walk to everything." The neighborhood features a wealth of midcentury-style homes surrounded by leafy, mature trees. Outdoor lovers will find plenty to enjoy here, from local community parks to rugged trails on the waterfront.

Older homes with modest yards and tall evergreens

The neighborhood offers a mix of older homes, mostly built between 1940 and 1960, with some newer, infill development. “A lot of older homes are being torn down and replaced entirely. Sometimes it’s just easier to scrap the whole thing and start from scratch,” Miller says. Lots are on the smaller side, offering intimate yards shaded by tall evergreen trees. Modest cottages, Craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes are the most common home styles, although the occasional newly built home can also be found here. Most of the properties are owner occupied, although there are still plenty of options to rent. Prices range from $300,000 to $800,000, depending on the size and age of the home. Large, newly built homes sell from around $700,000 to $1 million.

Classic eateries and casual dinner spots line Sherman Avenue

East Midtown offers a range of beloved local eateries on Sherman Avenue, within walking distance for many residents. For a classic diner setting, residents can grab a table at Jimmy’s Down the Street, while Roger’s Ice Cream & Burgers, established in 1940, serves no-frills burgers and decadent ice cream cones. In the evening, locals head to Moon Time or Coeur d’Alene Cider Company for dinner and drinks. Harvest Foods is the go-to for groceries and everyday goods, but there’s also a Safeway and a Trader Joe’s within a few miles. The city’s busy downtown district is only a mile away.

Parks, trails and lake access offer year-round outdoor fun

The neighborhood is near plenty of green spaces and outdoor recreation. “You’re walking and biking distance from all sorts of parks and trails on the lake,” Miller says. It’s just a short walk or drive to McEuen Park, a 22-acre downtown park on the shores of Coeur d’Alene Lake. It has a playground, splash pad, boat launch, pickleball courts and an off-leash dog park. It also hosts several annual festivals and a popular summer concert series. “Concerts in the park are a big deal. It brings out thousands of people,” Miller says. The park sits just north of Tubbs Hill Natural Area, a rugged peninsula park with scenic trails, rocky vistas, a beach and several places where people can jump into the lake from low cliffs. Avid golfers can tee up at The Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course, a public course with sweeping views of the lake. Person Field, within the community, has a playground, a ball field and a quarter-mile jogging track.

Local students attend B-rated public schools close to home

Students start their education close to home at Fernan STEM Academy, which emphasizes science, technology, engineering and math to prepare students for later studies and careers. The next steps are Lakes Middle School and Coeur d’Alene High School. All three schools earn B ratings from Niche. Coeur d’Alene High is one of two high schools serving the Coeur d’Alene metro and enrolls around 1,500 students every year.

Walkable streets with easy access to I-90 and public transit

East Midtown is a walkable neighborhood that allows residents to get to nearby destinations, shops and restaurants without a car. Interstate 90 runs along the neighborhood’s east edge, offering an east-west route through North Idaho and a 35-mile drive to Spokane, Washington. Route A of the Citylink bus system has stops along Sherman Avenue, offering public transit throughout the city. Kootenai Health is the nearest major hospital, just 3 miles away. Those who need to catch a domestic or international flight can head to Spokane International Airport, about 40 miles west.
