Fernan Hill is an expansive neighborhood on the outskirts of Coeur d'Alene, offering a piece of the North Idaho countryside without being too far from city amenities. "It has secondary waterfront views and utilities are there," says Brad Little, an agent with Clearwater Properties of Idaho and a longtime area resident. "If you're going to build a home, there are a lot of reasons to do it here." The neighborhood sits on a hill above Fernan Lake, and while it doesn't have direct water access, many homes come with lake views. Large acreage properties, hilly terrain and a tree-covered landscape add to the area's natural feel. Sherman Avenue is just 2 miles away, leading to over 100 shops and restaurants in downtown Coeur d'Alene.
Mountain homes with nature views and wildfire risk
Many homes in Fernan Hill are custom log cabins and Craftsman or ranch-style houses. Some areas, like the gated Beckon Ridge subdivision, feature spacious New Traditional homes with stone exteriors and three-car garages. Several properties offer water views, and some even have views of Lake Coeur d'Alene. Buyers can easily find homes on an acre or more, providing plenty of room for small-scale farming, owning horses or other activities. Properties rarely come on the market; only two homes have sold in the past year, with prices ranging from $670,000 for a 1,500-square-foot house to $1.4 million for a home with 3,300 square feet.
The neighborhood's CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Due to the large amount of vegetation, the area faces a significant risk of wildfires. Kootenai County is currently updating its All-Hazard Mitigation Plan.
Fishing, boating and sports at local parks
Fernan Lake is a large recreational draw. A small park on the western shore features floating docks where residents can fish for rainbow trout, largemouth bass and catfish. The park also has a boat launch. Access to Lake Coeur d'Alene is available at Silver Beach Marina, about 3 miles away. Nearby Cherry Hill Park has several activities, including disc golf, pickleball and a sledding hill. Golfers can play a quick round at the nine-hole Ponderosa Springs Par 3 Golf Course. The public course has water hazards and sand traps suitable for beginners, but will help avid players improve their game.
Coeur d'Alene's shopping and dining are close to home
With its location on the edge of Coeur d'Alene, Fernan Hill is close to the city's shopping and dining destinations. "There are plenty of restaurants in town. Tony's is iconic. It's probably the closest restaurant to the Fernan Hill area," Little says. Tony's on the Lake is on East Coeur d'Alene Lake Drive, known for its water views and traditional Italian dishes. Michael D's is another spot that Little recommends, a casual log cabin-themed restaurant that serves classic diner food for breakfast and lunch. A string of independent shops line Sherman Avenue, selling clothing, gifts, art and sporting goods. Groceries are available at Harvest Foods or the locally owned Pilgrim's Market. The north side of town has big-box stores like Costco and Target.
Coeur d'Alene schools offer advanced courses throughout K-12
Fernan STEM Academy, Lakes Middle School and Coeur d'Alene High School each earn a B from Niche. Fernan STEM Academy serves kindergarten through fifth grade and focuses on STEM education. Students participate in projects including robotics, building with Legos, and collecting plant and water samples. The high school offers Advanced Placement and honors classes in several subjects, including history, biology and physics. Students can also participate in ski and snowboard clubs.
Commuting around the Idaho panhandle
Interstate 90 is just west of the neighborhood, offering an east-west route across North Idaho. The highway leads about 36 miles west to Spokane and 42 miles to Spokane International Airport. Kootenai Health is the closest hospital, about 5 miles away.
