Fernan Lake is a secluded, outdoorsy community by two lakes
Fernan Lake is a community in the pine-covered foothills of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains. Its namesake natural lake provides waterfront recreation and picturesque views. Purely residential, the area’s homes are tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the major Idaho metro. “Buyers like the affordability. It has a small lake, and it’s really close to town,” says Realtor Josie Krahn, who works with Windermere Real Estate Valley/Liberty Lake and has about two decades of experience in the area. Fernan Lake is within 2 miles of Coeur d'Alene’s historic downtown, making it convenient, despite its rural forest retreat feel.
Fernan Boat Launch, Tubbs Hill Trail and more lakefront recreation
Fernan Lake offers access to plenty of waterfront recreation. On the south side of the community, Fernan Boat Launch offers kayaking, a dock and foothill scenery. “It's a small lake, so most people use it as a fishing lake, but it's beautiful to look at,” Krahn says. Fernan Lake Natural Area, just south of the city, has a 1-mile loop up to overlooks of the lake. About a mile south of the community, the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course has a public 18-hole course featuring a hole on a floating green in Coeur d'Alene Lake, accessible by boat. The nearby Tubbs Hill Trail is a 2-mile trek with a swimming beach and panoramic views of the mountains.
Ranch-style homes, bi-levels and split-levels in Fernan Lake
Just east of Coeur d'Alene, Fernan Lake is a subdivision composed of winding streets that ascend through the foothills of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains. Many of the homes have a few towering evergreens in their front lawns and dense woods in their backyards. Some properties overlook the surrounding ridgeline and the community’s namesake lake. “Most people just have a view of it; there’s not a lot of waterfront,” Krahn says. Widely developed in the 1960s and ‘70s, Fernan Lake offers an array of midcentury architecture. Ranch-style homes range from $600,000 to $800,000, which is slightly less expensive than similar homes in town — some ranch-style homes in Coeur d'Alene can go up to $1 million. Bi-levels and split-levels range from $900,000 to $940,000. There's also undeveloped land available, ranging from $150,000 to $190,000.

Local retail from Michael D’s to Harvest Foods
Fernan Lake doesn’t have any shopping or dining, which keeps the community quiet. Bordering its west side, a small retail district offers a few locally owned restaurants, including the diner Michael D's Eatery and Juniors Cocina Mexicana. “Both of them are great. Michael D’s has great breakfast and paleo options,” Krahn says. Serving authentic dishes, Juniors Cocina Mexicana is known for its margaritas and fajitas. “Juniors is just cute with good food and a small family-owned feel,” Krahn says. Vantage Point Brewing Company is an ideal summer hangout spot, with a dog-friendly patio and cornhole. The closest grocery store is Harvest Foods, only about a mile away from Fernan Lake.
Events like Fernan Fishing Derby and Lake Village Farmers Market
The annual Fernan Fishing Derby in May encourages kids to go fishing, with prizes awarded for the largest catches for each age group. On the west side of the community, the Lake Village Farmers Market has live music, food vendors and fresh produce every Sunday afternoon during the summertime.
Only 2 miles to downtown Coeur d'Alene and more transportation
Major employers nearby include Kootenai Health and North Idaho College. The community is only a couple of miles east of downtown Coeur d'Alene. Via Interstate 90, Fernan Lake is about 35 miles from Spokane, Washington, and Spokane International Airport.
