Colona is a quiet town 10 miles from the heart of Moline, and just across the Rock River from East Moline. In the late 90s, Colona merged with the city of Green Rock; now it is about 5,000 residents strong. “For a town this size, they have a lot of nice things, like an active senior citizen committee and an annual Memorial Day Festival,” says Candice Shamsie, Broker at Ruhl & Ruhl Realtors with 22 years of real estate experience. The headquarters for Tennant Truck Lines is nearby, and it’s easy to hook onto one of the interstates to go beyond the bounds of the community. Thanks to its location between three bodies of water, this small community enjoys outdoor recreation while still being within reach of Quad Cities amenities.

Walk to school
Colona Grade School teaches prekindergarten through Grade 8 and earns a C-minus on Niche. It is located in the heart of Colona and within walking distance of many homes. United Township High School in East Moline earns a B from Niche. Through one of its many partnerships with local organizations, it offers free webinars about how to afford college. Prospective residents should note that some Colona homes may be districted to attend other schools in Orion to the south or Geneseo to the east.
Dine locally or hook onto I-80 for more shopping
Positioned with easy access to Interstate 80 and 280, Colona also has several bus stops for residents to get around. State Route 84 (also known as Colona Road) runs through the middle of Colona, by the public library and Dollar General, and on to Silvis, the next town over. “The Dollar General has staples, like milk, bread and canned goods, but for major grocery shopping, Silvis has a Jewel-Osco and a Walmart,” says Shamsie. “Most businesses in Colona are family owned.” Locals can head to Grease Monkeys Sports Bar and Grill for casual fare, or to Lavender Crest Winery for wine tastings, special events and lunch served daily.
Outdoor recreation as entertainment
The three bodies of water in Colona are the Rock River, Green River and Hennepin Canal; residents can go fishing in all three. Rock River also provides a natural playground for tubing and boating. Bikers utilize the Hennepin Canal State Trail, which goes over historic bridges and past bucolic farms. Runners also use the trail for the volunteer-run Hennepin Hundred Ultramarathon, an annual 100-mile relay. Additionally, locals camp and swim at Colona Scott Family Park and play golf at nearby TPC Deere Run and Country View Golf Course.
