Less than 5 miles from the capital of Pennsylvania, Colonial Park offers quick access to Harrisburg and one of the area’s largest shopping hubs. Part of greater Lower Paxton Township, the community has seen an influx of new residents looking to move close to the capital city. According to the U.S. Census, the area’s population increased by nearly 23% -- to 16,243 residents -- from 2010 to 2020. “Development in town has increased recently; there’s a lot of new construction and new businesses,” says Ysmaine Domiciano, Broker/Owner with NextHome Dream Seekers Realty, who’s been working as a Realtor in the area for over a decade.
Many people here commute to Harrisburg for work, where major employers include local government, health care and the University of Pittsburgh. Around Lower Paxton Township, jobs in retail, finance and health care are available.

Commuting via Route 22
Commuters can take U.S. Route 22 into Harrisburg. Bus service to the Market Square Transfer Center in Harrisburg is accessible from Route 22 as well. “Traffic can get backed up on the main road, but it’s a reasonable sacrifice for being so close to what you need,” says Domiciano. UPMC Harrisburg is the closest hospital, located 5 miles west. Harrisburg International Airport is 8 miles south.
Community green space, close to Hersheypark
Brightbill Park is a 41-acre green space with sports facilities, a playground and a picnic area. ABC North Lanes is a popular bowling alley along Locust Lane. Just 5 miles north, Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area has an extensive, 12-mile trail system. And less than 10 miles east, Hersheypark is the largest amusement park in the state.

Crime stats, local flood risks
According to data from Pennsylvania’s Uniform Crime Reporting System, from 2022 to 2023 violent offences increased by around 4% and property crime decreased by almost 9%. Colonial Park is susceptible to flooding from storm surge and nearby waterways. In late 2024, parts close to Colonial Park Mall experienced major flooding as a result of severe storms. Homeowners may qualify for discounted flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.
