Suburban Neighborhood in Colorado Springs, Colorado
El Paso County 80911
With the Rocky Mountains to the west and expansive prairies to the east, Security-Widefield offers a picturesque vista of Colorado.
Located on the edge of Colorado Springs, it’s populated by split- and multi-level residences, primarily ranch homes and Craftsman-style houses with stonework. Residences range from $240,000 to over $500,000, and some have sold for more than $600,000. Security-Widefield consists of the Clearview Estates, Pheasant Run Ranch and Main Street – South Academy Boulevard areas.
Take to the playground or shoot some hoops at Barnstormer’s Park, enjoying fresh air while playing a game of one-on-one with the rugged eastern ridge of the Rockies as a backdrop. Windmill Mesa Park and Pi-Ute Park also offer playgrounds and open field areas for games of pickup baseball or football.
Students in this community attend French Elementary, which scores a B- on Niche and prides itself as a Leader in Me institution, focusing on instilling qualities of leadership in its students. Sproul Junior High School follows and also scores a B- with Niche, as does Widefield High School. All three rank 17th or better on lists of the state’s most diverse elementary, middle and high schools, respectively. Other educational institutions in the area include Pinello Elementary School, Discovery High School and the Haven School. The Haven School serves kindergarten through 12th grade, offering virtual and hybrid forms of education and emphasizing a sense of community with a low student-to-teacher ratio.
Pikes Peak, one of the Rockies’ most notable mountains, soars skyward to the west. It’s also the site of the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a century-old motorsports event that draws spectators from around the globe. It extends for over 12 miles with 156 turns, the finish line more than 14,000 feet above sea level. Its first winner clocked a time of nearly 21 minutes in 1916; the current record was set in 2018 at seven minutes, 57 seconds.
The Rockies also offer a wide range of paths to its summit. The 19-mile Pikes Peak Highway takes folks in their cars to the top, or you can climb aboard the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway to enjoy the ride up. Don’t worry – you can also challenge yourself to take on the 14,115-foot peak on foot or by bicycle via the Barr Trail. The mountain consistently draws more than half a million visitors each year to its slopes and visitor centers.
Closer to Security-Widefield, head down the road to the Pueblo-style architecture of MoGlo Espresso, a family-owned and operated coffee shop, or select a midday or evening meal at Ruffrano’s Hell’s Kitchen Pizza. Nearby restaurants include Jack Quinn’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, featuring an authentic Irish atmosphere, and Garden of the Gods Market & Café, which offers a grab-‘n-go breakfast and lunch. The latter takes its name from a public park less than half an hour from Clearview Estates, where you can find a nature center and a maze of towering red rocks millions of years old.
“It’s a real tourist attraction,” says Garden of the Gods Market & Café general manager Chris Heinrich. “It’s scenic, it’s right at the base of the mountains. People go and take photos, go hiking, visit the shop and there’s a place to get food. It’s pretty cool.”
The market itself also serves dinner as TILL Neighborhood Bistro & Bar.
“Our business has picked up over the last year and a half, predominantly by word-of-mouth,” Heinrich says. “We do features all the time, but I think people come here because it’s a comfortable place.”
For general needs, Walmart and the Big R serve as catch-alls for shoppers, while Ross Dress for Less provides a clothing-focused consumer experience. The local Planet Fitness is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Security-Widefield offers a small community located in the heart of Colorado’s hallmark scenery.
