Historic architecture in the heart of Columbia
Prospective homebuyers are drawn to Elmwood Park thanks, in large part, to historic summer traditions like potluck porch parties. Established as a suburb of Columbia in 1904, Elmwood Park has experienced a remarkable share of transformation over the years while still retaining its character. The interstate now presides where electric streetcars once threaded the neighborhood and newly built multi-story homes gaze across the street at bungalows constructed in 1935. Yet even as the new BullStreet District rises on the east side of Main Street, the citizens of Elmwood Park preserve their neighborly atmosphere as meticulously as their community’s architectural theme, creating a unique downtown community that welcomes change while holding on to its mid-century heritage.

A mix of Southern styles in South Carolina
The streets of Elmwood Park are brimming with an eclectic mix of styles, ranging from meticulously restored historic houses to new construction built in keeping with the area’s storied theme. “There is a mix of styles — bungalows, traditional Southern homes with big porches and columns, and newer Craftsmans,” says Realtor Mary Lane Sloan, co-owner of The Art of Real Estate and life-long resident of Columbia. “There’s a little bit of everything over here.” Prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the home. A 1935 two-bedroom bungalow with recent updates can begin around $270,000, while four-bedroom Victorian-inspired homes built in 2023 price around $580,000. Each home has unique features, including wraparound front porches and wrought-iron fences. While most yards are small and shallow, neighbors present “yard of the month” awards to one another for the best-maintained among them.

Residents of Elmwood Park can shop for groceries at the Publix Super Market at Gervais Place, although the small parking lot tends to create traffic jams and can be tricky to navigate. Uncle Willie’s Grocery Store is an independent shop directly in the neighborhood that provides an alternative. The nearest Target is 6 miles east of the neighborhood in the Shoppes at Woodhill. Elmwood Park is hemmed by the city’s Main Street district. “You can walk to shops like The Vino Garage or to restaurants like The War Mouth,” Sloan says. “There are a lot of amenities here that the neighborhood just didn’t have 10 years ago.” The Vino Garage is a locally owned wine and beer shop that features unique options unavailable in big box stores, while The War Mouth is a popular destination for hearty Southern cooking with a modern twist.

The Vista Greenway begins at the southern edge of the neighborhood along Elmwood Avenue, giving residents access to a mile-long paved walking trail that runs into the heart of Columbia’s Finlay Park.

The BullStreet District and porch potlucks
Elmwood Park is just steps away from Columbia’s rapidly developing BullStreet District. Billed as the hub of the new urban South, this district is centered around Segra Park, home of the city’s minor league baseball team, the Columbia Fireflies. Closer to home, Elmwood Park residents routinely host porch parties, Halloween celebrations and coffee get-togethers with local law enforcement.
