Heathwood is wonderfully walkable
Established in 1914, Heathwood has all the makings of a classic Southern neighborhood with its eye-catching architecture, walkability and proximity to locally owned boutiques and eateries. Lofty oak and maple trees shade the quiet residential streets and lend a sense of serenity, yet downtown Columbia and the University of South Carolina, one of the area’s biggest employers, are just three miles away. “Heathwood has that old Columbia feel. There are beautiful, well-maintained older homes there. On some of those streets, you feel like you’re in Charleston,” says Chad Dorman, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty and a Columbia native. “You’ll see people out walking their dogs and biking around the neighborhood all the time. It’s a really convenient place to live. You can walk to downtown from a lot of places in the neighborhood.”
Heathwood's sidewalks are safe place to walk or jog and have plenty of shade from mature trees.
Wide streets still maintain their privacy in Heathwood and make a great place to excercise pets.

Heathwood’s curb appeal
Heathwood’s winding roads feature some of Columbia’s most striking houses peppered with old-growth trees and landscaped gardens that the owners have carefully tended. “The homes and lot sizes in Heathwood are larger than most of the surrounding neighborhoods,” Mary Lane Sloan, broker and co-owner of the Art of Real Estate, with 17 years of experience. “They’re also conveniently located to Devine Street, so people can walk to restaurants and shops.” Home buyers will find an attractive mix of housing, including Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and Greek Revivals, many dating back more than 75 years. Tree swings and porticos with rocking chairs and hanging lanterns add to the area’s Southern charm. There’s also some newer in-fill construction, providing an option for those looking to live in an established neighborhood but avoid the upkeep and maintenance that can come with owning an older home. The average sale price hovers around $575,000. A three-bedroom bungalow could be found for $400,000, while a stately 5-bedroom might fetch upwards of $1 million. “If homes are priced right, they’ll sell within a couple of weeks,” Dorman says.

Brennen Elementary School is a public school in Columbia near Heathwood.
Kids attend top-ranked Richland School District No. 1 schools
Public school students may attend Brennen Elementary, before moving on to Crayton Middle and A.C. Flora High. Part of Richland School District No. 1, all three schools score A-minus Niche grades. “People like moving to Heathwood because it’s a school choice neighborhood,” Sloan says. “The area is technically zoned for A.C. Flora High School, but students can also attend Dreher High School, which is within walking distance in the neighborhood.” A.C. Flora may be an attractive choice for student-athletes due to the school’s storied athletic program boasting dozens of state championships. Dreher High School is another highly rated option, earning an A from Niche. The prestigious Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, which serves students in prekindergarten through 12th grade, is located about five miles southeast of the neighborhood. The private school is ranked as the second-best in the state by Niche. “Heathwood Hall is a big draw,” Dorman says. “A lot of people will not be sending their kids to public schools.”
Go outside and play at Heathwood Park
At Heathwood Park, the neighborhood’s main recreational attraction, kids romp around the playground and cool off on the splash pad during the summer months. Locals of all ages flock to this community space on Abelia Road to play tennis or handball on the courts. Mays Park is a tranquil neighborhood spot, shaded by tall pines. The park on Deans Lane offers another playground option for kids, basketball and tennis courts.
Devine Street serves as a hub for shopping and dining
Many of Heathwood’s peaceful residential roads connect to Devine Street, where the dining has a bit of an international flair. It’s one of Columbia’s most frequented streets due to restaurants like Za’s for pizza and pasta, Cantina 76 for tacos and Basil for spicy Thai dishes. It’s also flanked by an array of watering holes, coffee bars and boutique dress shops. For cooking at home, residents can pick up groceries at the Piggly Wiggly on Devine. There’s also a Publix 2 miles south of the neighborhood in the Rosewood Shopping Center and a Whole Foods in the nearby Cross Hill Market, about a mile away.
