Historic Waverly
Historic Waverly’s got curb appeal
Colonial Revivals, American Foursquares and Craftsman bungalows are common here. Most homes rest on compact lawns adorned with shrubbery. Narrow sidewalks line the streets, allowing for leisurely walks around the neighborhood. “The area has a lot of older houses that were used as rentals for many years,” says Mary Lane Sloan, broker and co-owner of Art of Real Estate, who has 17 years of experience. “Now people are buying them and fixing them up. A lot of transition is happening, with some homes even being knocked down and rebuilt.” Home prices range from $125,000 to $350,0000, which Sloan says “is much more affordable than a lot of neighborhoods near downtown.” Smaller two-bedroom cottages cost between $125,000 and $200,000, while larger three-to-five-bedroom homes run from $250,000 to $350,000.Martin Luther King Jr. Park is a go-to spot for relaxation and community events
Just south of the neighborhood in the heart of Five Points, Martin Luther King Jr. Park is an oasis from the hustle of the city. Locals can wander around the tranquil creek surrounded by lush greenery or relax on the benches with a good book. The park’s baseball fields and indoor basketball courts are typically packed with members of the community gathering to play a game. It’s also the site of city events, like the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, featuring speakers and live music. In addition to the celebration, there’s a memorial and fountain called "The Stone of Hope," paying tribute to the civil rights activist. Maxcy Gregg Park, 2 miles south on Park Circle, offers paved walking trails that run alongside colorful gardens and an Olympic-sized pool.St. Patrick’s Day celebration in nearby Five Points is a beloved event
St. Pat’s in Five Points is an anticipated annual celebration that draws more than 30,000 people from around the state and beyond. The Five Points Fountain on Saluda Avenue is dyed green prior to the event, which features a parade along Devine Street, live music and food vendors.Shopping and dining in Five Points
Locals can head down Harden Street to reach the lively Five Points district, where they’ll find plenty of stores and restaurants lining the streets, including a Food Lion to stock up on groceries. Along the strip, Groucho’s Deli has been a mainstay since 1941. The eatery serves up a variety of hoagies with sides of its iconic 45 Sauce for dipping. A block over on Devine Street, residents can walk up a flight of stairs into the bar at Village Idiot Pizza to grab the pizza of the month.Students zoned to attend Richland School District One schools
Public school students may attend Carver-Lyon Elementary, W.A. Perry Middle and C.A. Johnson High. Part of Richland School District One, the schools earn C-plus, C-minus and C Niche grades, respectively. Carver-Lyon Elementary offers a language immersion magnet program, where students can choose between learning Spanish, French or Mandarin Chinese.Locals can hop on The Comet to get around town
The Comet public bus system has stops along major thoroughfares like Harden and Gervais streets, allowing residents to easily navigate the city. For trips out of town, the Columbia Metropolitan Airport is about 8 miles southwest via Platt Springs Road and there’s an Amtrak station about 3 miles away on Pulaski Street. MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Downtown, a 304-bed hospital, is just northeast of the neighborhood on Forest Drive. The University of South Carolina is just a mile away via Gervais Street.
