Killian is a convenient spot for military families
Even though Killian is about 10 miles from downtown Columbia, it’s not uncommon to spot a coyote wandering across a parking lot in the early hours of the morning or to see a deer grazing on someone’s front lawn. Here, residents enjoy living in harmony with nature. Despite the encounters with wildlife, residents of Killian enjoy suburban comforts with plenty of big-box chains and fast-food options in the community.
Killian is equidistant from downtown and the US Army base, Fort Jackson. With proximity to both locations, Killian is a popular choice for military families and commuters alike. “That area is about to pop in terms of job growth,” says Billy Trevathan, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty, who grew up in the area. “There’s going to be a new Volkswagen electric vehicle plant about 10 minutes away in Blythewood. They’re building a $2 billion facility that’s expected to bring 4,000 jobs. That area is fantastic for job growth.”
A pleasant lake graces the Killian neighborhood.

Killian offers plenty of new builds
Killian offers everything from 1970s-era ranch homes to Cape Cods with roof-top dormer windows to contemporary homes with two-car garages. “In many parts of the neighborhood it’s not gonna be your normal cookie-cutter homes,” says Mike Matulis, a real estate agent with Century 21 Vanguard and long-time Columbia resident.
Some of the newer developments, like The Villages at Lakeshore, offer residents access to community amenities such as pools and playgrounds. “Killian is a growing neighborhood and there are a lot of developments going up in the area,” Matulis says. Single-family homes typically range from $250,000 to $400,000, but larger homes with multi-acre lots can sell for nearly $600,000.

Columbia Metropolitan Airport is nearby
Although The Comet public bus system has stops along major thoroughfares, like Killian Road, most locals rely on their cars. With the community’s growth comes increased traffic, which can get particularly bad around rush hour. Downtown Columbia is about 10 miles south via Route 277 and the Columbia Metropolitan Airport is about 25 miles away along the same stretch of road. Fort Jackson can be reached with about a 10-mile drive on Interstate 77 South. For travel up and down the East Coast, Amtrak’s Silver Star Line stops in downtown Columbia. MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Northeast, a 75-bed hospital, sits just south of the community.
Killian Rd is one of the neighborhood's main thoroughfares.
