Columbia's oldest suburban neighborhoods
Not to be confused with neighboring Shandon, this petite historic district was established in 1893, making it one of Columbia’s oldest neighborhoods. The planned community was designed to feel like a spacious park with wide streets canopied by mature trees. Old Shandon has since emerged as a neighborhood where its prime location and variety of established and upgraded homes are among its most significant advantages. Close to Devine Street and the trendy Five Points area, it’s become a sought-after spot for college students renting out an older, revitalized home. Families also enjoy Old Shandon’s location in a well-regarded school district.

A mix of styles from 1950s Old Shandon
The bulk of the homes in Old Shandon were developed as far back as the Victorian era and continued into the mid-1950s. Settled along the neighborhood’s wide, hilly streets are bungalows, Colonial Revival, Neo-Classical, Prairie-style homes and Queen Anne houses converted into duplexes. Minimal yard space is maximized with shrubbery and old-growth trees providing shade. “While the lot sizes are smaller, one of Old Shandon’s biggest draws is that it’s not as expensive as nearby Shandon or Heathwood,” says Mary Lane Sloan, broker and co-owner of the Art of Real Estate. Prices range from the low $200,000s to $300,000s for a two-bedroom residence. However, like all Columbia neighborhoods, housing prices have skyrocketed in the last three years and continue to do so. Homes that offer over 2,000 square feet of living space and three or more bedrooms are often priced between $400,000 and $500,000. “Everyone seems to be moving here, and it seems to be a lot of people from out of town,” says Rachel Sealey, a Realtor at 803 Realty. “Maybe it’s because we’re friendly and offer a slower-paced lifestyle.” Homeowners and renters make up equal parts of the neighborhood community.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Riverfront Parks
Five Points is home to Martin Luther King Jr. Park, which honors its namesake through a memorial called ‘The Stone of Hope.’ The community green space hosts a large playground, baseball field and indoor basketball courts. The park also hosts concerts and other events throughout the year. “There’s also Riverfront Park, which is really nice since the state has spent a lot of money on it,” Shealey adds. There are several different entrances, and there’s always somebody walking around the river or kayaking. Innertubes are popular there, too, since there are also multiple drop-off points.” For camping, fishing and boating, the expansive Lake Murray is only 15 miles away.

Devine Street and Five Points' amenities
The district’s southwest corner is adjacent to the quirky Five Points area, which is densely packed with bars and retailers. Drip Coffee is a favorite among USC students, and the nearby Gourmet Shop is a popular lunch spot that also offers fresh cheese and meats. A Food Lion is also located at Five Points off Harden Street. Old Shandon is separated from its similarly named neighbor by trendy Devine Street, home to high-end shops with eclectic storefronts like Unforgettable Fine Jewelry, Strictly Running and POUT Cosmetics & Skin Studio. Locally owned restaurants are within walking distance, including Publick House or Backstreets Grill for brews and wings. Backstreets also offers a tailgating menu during football season for the University of South Carolina fans headed to games at Williams-Brice Stadium. An Earth Fare and Piggly Wiggly also sit along the traffic-packed thoroughfare, providing options for weekly grocery store runs.

Soda City and book clubs
Bookworms may gravitate toward the charming Richland Library Wheatley in the heart of the neighborhood. Named after a well-known 18th-century poet, this branch has a rich history in the Columbia area dating back to 1930. The outdoor patio has become a community hub, where locals congregate with the latest books topping the bestseller list. In October, the South Carolina State Fair comes to Rosewood Drive, a 2 miles away, and attracts hundreds for a night of live music, rides and games. The same plot of land hosts two other events every May: The Rosewood Crawfish Festival and the South Carolina Food Truck and Craft Beer Festival. “Soda City is huge here,” Shealey says. “It’s every Saturday and super dog-friendly. They shut down Main Street and line it with local vendors.” According to Shealey, the University of South Carolina football games are a huge deal, and fans often fill the Williams-Brice Stadium, even though the stadium was built to hold over 50,000 people.
