Embrace the future and preserve the past
In Columbiana, the motto is “embrace the future and preserve the past.” This approach leaves residents with a mix of high-quality amenities, local shops, country living and a strong sense of community. “We’ve got great schools and great parks and I’d say overall we’re just a very quaint southern town,” says a local employee at the Shelby County Exhibition Center. Established in 1837, Columbiana holds onto its roots by showcasing historic buildings they’ve worked hard to preserve and integrate into the lively atmosphere of their bustling downtown.
New apartments to rural farmhouses
Columbiana housing has everything from newly constructed downtown apartments to early 1920s farmhouses and brick colonials on rural stretches upward of 15 acres. “I’d say most of the homes in the area are rural and on the older side. There are a couple of apartments though that are really popular with senior residents,” says the exhibition center employee. Single-family home prices range from $160,000 ranch-style homes in need of a little TLC to $2,150,000 custom waterfront homes. Homes can be anywhere from 1,100 to 4,800 square feet in size and there are about 3,300 total homes in the neighborhood. The average number of days on the market for homes in Columbiana is slightly lower than the national average.

Visit the scenic Main Street
Downtown Columbiana is known for its active and scenic Main Street where locally-owned shops and restaurants are connected by sidewalks and warm brick walls are decorated with murals. Street lamps and crisscrossing string lights brighten historic architecture like the county’s 1854 courthouse. “The downtown area is adorable thanks to our Main Street committee which keeps it decorated, neat and beautiful,” says the exhibition center employee. “And there are loads of good stores. Everything about the street just makes you want to stop and shop.” Leader’s Corner Coffee and Tea has cozy vibes and historic construction, with walls dating back to pre-Civil War times. Blue Agave Cantina boasts a renovated space, a full bar and authentic Mexican dishes like steak fajitas. Locals can pick up their groceries from Piggly Wiggly and browse the pop-up retail booths at Shops of Columbiana. Find locally sourced supplies at Sweet Tweets or peruse the home goods at The Farm Company.

Gather around the fountain
Locals gather around the sculpture-filled fountain at the center of Old Mill Square Park for both private and public events, like annual festivals or the tree lighting ceremony every December. The Columbiana Sports Complex offers softball and little league programs along with a concession stand for sports fans to enjoy. Players can take advantage of amenities like covered batting cages and additional fields that include soccer and football options as well. The park also has a playground, two picnic pavilions and walking trails.
Be sure and visit Old Mill Square Park in Columbiana.
Don't miss the rodeo
Outside of downtown, the Columbiana neighborhood stretches into more rural territory populated by farmhouses and ranches like Randall Equestrian. These locals, despite being further away, still swing by Main Street to pick up the essentials or gather at the event center. “It gets very rural very quickly as you move away from Main Street,” says the exhibition center employee. “But in the spring and fall we have a farmer's day every Saturday and there’s also a big rodeo and bull riding event at the exhibition center in January and February that folks love coming to.”
Walkable Main Street
While Main Street and the handful of apartments and newer homes surrounding it are easily walkable, the rural stretches that make up the majority of the neighborhood mean it's a bit of a drive for residents to reach the amenities of Downtown Columbiana or further outside the neighborhood. Access to major roadways like Interstate 65 adds some convenience to the trip.
