Columbiana is officially one of the nicest places in America

Many small cities across America might claim to be friendly communities, and rightly so. However, Columbiana is one of the few that can truly claim the title. It was voted "The Nicest Place in America" by Reader's Digest in 2019. "We're just a small Ohio city, and we're best known for how friendly our community is," says Bridget Wolsonovich, executive director of the Columbiana Chamber of Commerce. A resident entered Columbiana into the competition, and the community's enthusiastically supportive spirit was the deciding factor. "We got noticed for our inclusivity," Wolsonovich says. "We have theater productions and community events that involve everyone in the community. Everyone is so supportive and takes so much pride in the events." Even as Columbiana grows, the community is committed to maintaining a small-town focus where everyone has a chance to shine.

Early-1900s homes in the city and new suburbs outside

Main Street and Park Avenue are the foundations of the residential area's gridded streets at the city's center. The median home price is about $230,000. Housing options in the city range from pre-1920s cottages and bungalows to 1970s ranch-style homes. On each street, homes sit on grassy lawns with lots of shade trees. Outside the main grid are small tract developments with 1990s and 2000s New Traditional homes that typically sell above the median price. Firestone Farms is the highest-priced of these suburban communities outside of Columbiana. Its larger and newer New Traditional homes can cost over $700,000. The development is accompanied by a commercial plaza with restaurants, shops, a doctor's office and other businesses.

Main Street is the center of activity

The roundabout clock at the intersection of Main Street and Park Avenue marks the city's center. The blocks around it are home to many local businesses, but Main Street is the center of activity. "Main Street is super walkable," Wolsonovich says. "And it's just very visually charming." Generations Café and Carla's Corner Café are Main Street staples, as well as boutiques like Sweet & Stylish on Main. Birdfish Brewing on Park Avenue is a couple of blocks away. Columbiana even has a Dutch district on the north end of Main Street, marked by establishments like Das Dutch Haus Restaurant. It's across from Sparkle Market, the local supermarket. "There are so many great spots, and now there are new places like Homestead Kitchen and Sabi's in the new Town Center area." These are in the Town Center at Firestone Farms — the plaza accompanying the new development.

Ponds, pools, courts and a football field at Firestone Park

Firestone Park is Columbiana's primary recreation space. This 68-acre park is a block from the city's center. It has plenty of green space, a small lake and gardens that can be explored on paved walking paths. There are also Little League fields, tennis facilities, a pool and a football field that hosts youth league games. Hippley Gardens is a whimsical display in the residential streets to the north. Tucked between homes, this garden has a fairytale-like setting with child-sized cottages, gnomes and statues of recognizable cartoon characters. Golfers can play at two public facilities, Valley Golf Club or Links at Firestone Farms.

We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
