Home listings tout boat ramps and proximity to the water
Homes overlook Lake Harding or dot small subdivisions within a mile or two of the lakefront. Residences are a mix of cottages, ranch-style homes and new Millennial models, plus a few of the old fish camps. “Back in the day this lake was mainly a fishing lake,” says Johnson. “You saw the small cabins and all that. But that’s not the case anymore. Now it’s million-dollar houses and that kind of thing.” Recent home prices range from $210,000 for a lakefront cottage to $530,000 for a new Millennial home with a porch and gazebo. Many recent sales are for condos in the lakeside Backwaters complex. Condos range from $170,000 to $379,000. Georgia Power built Bartlett’s Ferry Dam, which created Lake Harding, and many residents have long-term leases for their homes with the utility. The lake is a focal point for recreation
Old fishing camps line the lake, and bass fishing tournaments are a regular occurrence farther north on the Chattahoochee River, away from the homes and busyness of the lake. Boaters are also happy here, as evidenced by the many pontoons, wake boats and jet skis regularly skimming across the water. The surrounding Harris County is home to many parks and trails. Pate Park, about 12 miles east of Antioch, keeps families busy with its ball fields, football field and tennis courts.Harris County Schools are well-regarded
Elementary school students in Antioch enroll in Mountain Hill Elementary School, which earns a score of A-minus from Niche. Harris County Carver Middle also earns an A-minus from Niche. Clubs at Carver include the Board Game Club, Debate and Poetry. Parents of students at Harris County High can access weekly lesson plans by subject on the Harris County High School website. Niche grades the high school B-plus.The Fourth of July is a big celebration
Fireworks explode high above Lake Harding during Rumble on the River, which is held annually on the night of July 3rd. Locals watch the show from their boats. The next morning they’re back on the water for the 4th of July boat and jet ski parade. “There will be 100, 150 boats and probably 50, 60 jet skis, and they all gather in one spot and [then] they ride all the perimeters of the lake,” says Buddy Wallace, co-owner of the 219 Group, which oversees two Antioch restaurants and a market. “They’re all decorated, and it’s kind of a big thing.” Locals of faith gather on the Chattahoochee on Sunday mornings from June through August for River Church, a non-denominational Christian worship service off Two Tree Island. Congregants listen to the sermon and live music from their boats beside the tiny island, where two trees frame a cross.
Residents enjoy easy commutes to regional and international airports
It’s a 17-mile drive from Lake Harding to downtown Columbus. Columbus Airport is 18 miles southeast via Hwy 219 and I-185 while Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is 85 miles north via I-185. The Antioch area is not pedestrian-friendly, and homeowners will need a car for day-to-day errands. Lake Harding can be explored by boat, but access points are somewhat limited.Center of the action: Junction of Highway 219 and Bartlett’s Ferry Road
Residents need to drive to Columbus to find larger supermarkets, but some essentials can be purchased at Wallace’s shop, the Southern Market. This gourmet market sells hand-cut meats and fresh produce. Sundries are sold at the nearby Dollar General. Wallace also owns two restaurants in Antioch: 219 Food & Spirits and 219 on the Lake. The chef-driven menu at 219 Food & Spirits includes steaks, seafood and burgers while 219 on the Lake is known for its oysters and cocktails. “We get a lot of people coming in from Columbus because they want to see the lake, and that location has a really big deck. The way our location faces the lake, it’s the perfect place for a sunset.” 219 Food & Spirits hosts bingo and trivia nights and regular live music.
