A rich history and supportive community in Columbus' MidTown
Developed in the late 1940s as Columbus' first Black middle-class suburb, Carver Heights offers a look at the city’s history. The neighborhood sought to honor Columbus' Black population, giving them access to homeownership, security and community. “I think there’s a renaissance happening here,” says Lisa Herring, who, along with her husband Greg, founded the organization with support from St. Thomas Episcopal Church. “As the neighborhood got older, many homes fell into disrepair. Now, we’re seeing homes getting renovated and it’s great to see how the neighborhood is growing and honoring how it started.” Organizations like the East Carver Heights Community Development Corporation have been helping to support families, provide resources and improve the well-being of Carver Heights. “The neighborhood has a lot of pride and a lot of love,” Herring says. “Our goal is to help kids get involved in activities with the Boxwood Soccer Club and support their education with our Path to Shine program. There’s free registration, we just ask parents to support us however they can. We have a lot of great families and mentors that truly care about the children and the community.”
Ranch-style homes with budget-friendly prices
Carver Heights' roads wind through rolling, pine-shaded hills. The roads are lined with 1950s ranch-style homes and bungalows. Many homes still have midcentury-style exterior features, like window awnings, carports and small porches with white wrought-iron railings. Some homes feature screened-in porches or sunrooms, perfect for enjoying a warm evening. The brick and panel ranch-style homes typically cost between $50,000 and $130,000, so buyers may find budget-friendly starter home or rental property. Houses on the higher end of the pricing scale typically feature interior renovations, though many homes here have their original interiors.
