Laidback rural community minutes from Columbus

Full of pine forests, lush farmland and backyard ponds, Cataula allows residents to get close to the area's natural beauty. Buyers will find privacy here, but it's less than 20 miles from Columbus, so commuting is still manageable. "I have a lot of military clientele interested in this area because it gives that spacious, country-living feel, but it's only a 30-minute drive from Fort Benning," says Realtor Alison Cox with Keller Williams River Cities. Cox has over 20 years of experience selling homes. "It's a highly desirable area--Harris Country is just one of those communities where you always know someone who loves living out there. My son-in-law's parents live in Harris County, and they adore it."

Ranches and new traditional homes on two acres

Spacious homes surrounded by peaceful woods and tranquil lakes are the primary offerings here in Cataula. "When buyers are thinking about moving to Harris County, they're seeking privacy and lots of space," says Cox. "Houses here have to be on a minimum of one to two acres because of septic systems. There may be one or two subdivisions on sewer in north Harris County, but even those have plenty of room." There is a mix of late 20th-century bungalows and ranch-style homes costing between $200,000 and $300,000 and recently built new traditional homes costing between $300,000 and $500,000. Some new traditional homes are in laidback subdivisions like the Maple Creek community, which still provide at least an acre of land.
