Queen Anne, Craftsman and shingle cottages abound in Downtown Columbus
When walking down the streets of historic Downtown Columbus, colorful, well-kept homes stand out under the canopies of mature oak trees. There are preserved historic homes belonging to famous residents like Coca-Cola inventor John Pemberton and blues legend Ma Rainey. Buyers will find homes in several styles from the 18th and 19th centuries. Many homes feature renovated interiors and well-preserved exteriors in eye-catching colors like blue, green and pink. Closer to Broadway are richly ornamented Victorian, Queen Anne and Neoclassical homes. As the neighborhood extends from Broadway, there are Colonial Revival-style homes, Craftsman-inspired bungalows and shingle-style and shotgun cottages. Smaller homes cost between $250,000 and $300,000, while larger homes run between $315,000 and $500,000. Some of the largest Victorian and Queen Anne homes may cost up to $1 million.Close to Woodruff Park and Golden Park
Two recreational areas flank downtown Columbus. North of the neighborhood, in Uptown, is Woodruff Park. The park is on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and features picnic areas, a playground and a popular splash pad. The park connects to RushSouth Whitewater Park, which has high-intensity rapids, a zipline connecting to Phenix City, fishing areas, and even low-flow regions where visitors can float. "Woodruff and RushSouth are the best ways to enjoy the river," Cox says. "There are so many activities to do, and families are always at the splash pad during the summer." The parks also connect to Riverwalk, a popular walking and biking trail running from Flat Rock Park and down the river to Fort Benning. South of the neighborhood is Golden Park, which has a baseball stadium, riverside trails, a playground and an adjacent skatepark. "Golden Park is a big-ticket item here," says Realtor David Hickox with Keller Williams Realty. Hickox has nearly 10 years of real estate experience in the area. "The Atlanta Braves AA league is moving down here, which I think will highlight this area even more." Hickox also notes the adjacent Columbus Civic Center, home to the Columbus River Dragons hockey team.Heritage Art Center and The Goetchius House bring residents together
While the community is primarily residential, there are several restaurants and community spaces in the area. Heritage Art Center on Sixth Street is a community-based art gallery that showcases art from local artists and students. Minnie's Uptown is a lunch service-only cafeteria offering southern specialties like fried chicken and salmon patties, and The Goetchius House is a go-to for brunch. This multi-use space also features an upscale dinner menu, an ice cream parlor, yoga classes and live music. Realtor Mia Manns with Coldwell Banker and Kennon, Parker, Duncan & Davis notes the Coca-Cola Space Science Center as a favorite. "It's a popular area for families, especially during the summer," Manns, who has nearly 20 years of experience, says. Manns also highlights the abundant activities and events available in neighboring Uptown. "There's so much to do, you just have to get involved," says Manns. "There are candlelight concerts, Riverfest, Market Days on Broadway, Toast of the Town and the Food Truck Festival. The city closes down the bridge, and trucks line all Woodruff Park, across the bridge and over to Phenix City." Residents are just a short walk to Uptown, making it easy to enjoy popular restaurants like Saltcellar and various boutiques, breweries, bars and coffee shops. Residents can also catch a concert, play or musical at multiple venues across town, including Springer Opera House, RiverCenter for the Performing Arts and Phenix City Amphitheater. For groceries, there is a Piggly Wiggly a mile away in Phenix City and a Publix 4 miles away at Cross Country Plaza.Traveling around Columbus and beyond
Commuting around the city is convenient, with residents' proximity to Veterans Parkway. Residents can take Fourth Street west into Alabama and southeast to Fort Benning, 9 miles away. 13th Street can be followed west to Phenix City or east into Midtown. Interstate 185 is about 6 miles away, which residents can use to connect to neighboring cities like Auburn or Atlanta.
