East Wynnton-Wynnton Hill offers a familial feel in MidTown Columbus
A multistory building with a duck logo at the top stands between Wynnton and Buena Vista roads in Columbus. The headquarters of insurance giant Aflac, this towering landmark is one of the most visible sights in East Wynnton-Wynnton Hill. The neighborhood is part of MidTown, a core section of Columbus known for its cluster of historic districts. One of the neighborhood’s traits is its many quaint single-story homes built between the early and mid-20th century. The neighborhood’s other appeal is its increasingly close-knit community. Events include free monthly lunches at the Wynnton Methodist Church, which has itself helped restore the homes of many neighborhood families. “The good thing about the Wynnton area is it’s had a history of community connection,” says Jason Wade, the church’s senior pastor. “We want to be a family. We want to be a community. It’s not just about building a basketball court. It’s about building a relationship.”
Many homes are bungalows and Minimal Traditionals
The neighborhood consists of dense blocks of homes, all located along a mix of roads with and without sidewalks. Wired fences surround many yards, while non-native agave plants make up some of the neighborhood’s landscaping. Housing here includes Craftsman bungalows, Minimal Traditionals, ranch-style homes and the long and narrow shotgun-style houses. Houses can sell from about $50,000 for an investment property to $160,000 for a renovated three-bedroom home. However, single-family homes do not often go on the market. Additionally, about two-thirds of the neighborhood rents.
Local staples have doughnuts and down-home Southern cooking
Several locally-owned restaurants and fast-food chains line Wynnton and Macon roads. Morning stops here include Golden Donut, which has outdoor seating and a castle-themed playground. “It’s really good,” Wade says. “We work with them all the time. They provide a lot of churches with doughnuts on Sundays.” Country’s Barbecue is a Columbus staple that has one of its three city locations here. The restaurant serves down-home Southern food, which patrons can pair with drinks served in mason jars. The barbecue restaurant is in a rustic building, where the decor includes a taxidermy mount of a hog. Chain stores in the Cross Country Plaza include Publix, TJ Maxx and Burlington.
Students may access STEAM-focused programs
Many students may attend Rigdon Road Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche. Students may then go to Rothschild Leadership Academy, which serves students from sixth to eighth grade and gets a C-minus. The other school in the area is Carver High, which receives a C-plus and won a state football championship in 2024. Located just outside the neighborhood, the Wynnton Arts Academy is one of the district’s several magnet schools. The elementary school offers a STEAM-focused curriculum and gets a B-minus.
Amenities include the Columbus Aquatic Center and Lakebottom Park
The neighborhood has the Michael Fluellen Recreation Center, which is surrounded by a park with some basketball courts, a playground and some tree-shaded open spaces. The neighborhood is just south of the Columbus Aquatic Center, which has an Olympic-sized pool and a smaller pool typically used for open swims. Right outside the aquatic center, a splash pad draws visitors during the summer. Many residences here are a few minutes from Lakebottom Park, where there are tree-lined baseball, soccer and football fields. The park’s other amenities include walking trails, a few fitness stations and a sand volleyball court.
Monthly lunches aim to create conversations
Called Open Arms, the Wynnton Methodist Church’s lunch series occurs between noon and 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month. Occasionally, the church uses these events to host clothing drives and give out items like free school supplies. “It’s so we can sit down and have conversations,” Wade says about the lunches’ larger goal. “We want to meet our community, and we want to continue to be involved. We don’t want to assume we know what the community needs.”
Commuters have access to METRA buses
The METRA Transit System has many bus stops in the neighborhood. However, residents who drive have access to thoroughfares like Buena Vista and Macon roads. The neighborhood is 3 miles from downtown Columbus and near Interstate 185, which travelers can use to reach Atlanta, over 100 miles north. The interstate also goes to the Columbus Airport, about 5 miles north. Less than 5 miles away, the Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown is one of the nearest facilities for emergency care.
