The construction of Peacock Woods began 100 years ago

Magnolias are living their best lives in Peacock Woods-Dimon Circle, a well-manicured enclave just east of Lakebottom Park dotted with century-old homes. Wide roads curve past the Peacock Woods subdivision in the eastern reaches of the neighborhood as well as the Dimon Circle subdivision just west. For potential homebuyers the delight is in the details, with real estate listings for the largest homes touting Corinthian columns, koi ponds and chef kitchens while smaller properties brag about their “stones-throw” proximity to nearby parks. And though the neighborhood exudes tranquility, the messy exuberance of Midtown’s favorite menu items – the Scramble Dog at Dinglewood Pharmacy and the Smashburger at Jarfly – keeps things real.

Century-old homes occupy spacious lots framed by trees and foliage

Housing inventory is limited across the neighborhood, which is home to bungalows and mansions alike. Tidy shotgun cottages and Craftsman bungalows built in the 1920s and ‘30s face the park along Cherokee Avenue between 17th Street and 13th Street. With their front sidewalks and small porches, these homes look ready to accommodate a bit of laziness after a soccer game in the park. Further east, vast Georgian-style homes and Tudor mansions are set back on tree-framed lawns, where gardens and pools evoke the good life. Thanks to these large residences, the average square footage for homes in the neighborhood is 3,000 sq ft, which is higher than the national average of 1,935 sq ft. Prices range from $274,900 for a four-bedroom cottage up to $1.1 million for a five-bedroom Tudor-style home.

Restaurants serving decadent favorites are a few blocks from the neighborhood

Fast-food restaurants are scattered along Wynnton Road south of the neighborhood, but it's hard to get excited about mass-produced meals when an Almost World-Famous Scramble Dog – a hotdog so messy they serve it in a hotdog boat – awaits at Dinglewood Pharmacy. The oldest restaurant in Columbus, this pharmacy and soda fountain opened its doors in 1918. Burgers and fries are slathered with decadent toppings at Jarfly on 13th Street beside Dinglewood Park. “It’s a tiki-Mexicali vibe,” says Christina Jones, the front-of-house manager at Jaryfly. “We have a lot of tiki- and rum-inspired drinks, and we’re known for our smashburgers.” The restaurant draws a mix of customers from across Midtown says Jones, including families. For groceries, locals can stop by the Publix at Cross Country Plaza on Macon Road.
