The appeal of Berwick’s winding streets and central East Side location

Berwick is a quiet, established East Side neighborhood in Columbus with winding streets lined by mature trees, spacious lots and midcentury homes. Major highways and downtown are a short drive away, and everyday conveniences like shopping, dining and a popular community center are all close by. Families also have quick access to both public and private school options in the area.

Midcentury homes on larger lots shape Berwick’s price range

With its collection of midcentury homes, many ranch-style and split-level, Berwick has an old-school suburban vibe, complete with well-kept, spacious lawns dotted by mature trees. The winding street layout adds to the charm. "If you look at the roads in Berwick, they're not straight — they're all curved," says longtime local Rich Russo, managing broker of Rich Russo Realty & Co. "When I first moved here, I was driving in circles. It's like Hotel California — you get lost and never leave."

Recent sales have ranged from the low $200,000s to the low $500,000s, but larger floor plans and lots can push prices into the mid-$700,000s. Lots are generally larger here, some more than a quarter of an acre, than in nearby Glenbrook and Linwood, which is part of why prices tend to be higher, too. That said, prices are generally lower here than in nearby Bexley.

Where neighbors gather for fitness, pools and outdoor trails

According to Russo, if there’s one place you’re sure to see your neighbors, it’s the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus. “It’s a very active community center,” he says. “I’m not Jewish, and I’m still a member. They’ve got sports leagues, exercise classes, a gym, a daycare – it’s an awesome place. And a lot of people in Berwick can walk there.” Other amenities at the center include indoor and outdoor pools, a water playground and access to the Alum Creek Trail. The trail follows the wooded banks of Alum Creek, running right along the edge of the neighborhood. It connects to a larger network of paved greenways, letting visitors walk, bike or jog for miles along connected paths.

There is not that much night life near Bexely. All the seniors tell me there is one bar to go to in Bexely. Downtown is a very fun place.

Columbus rarely has any violent crime, robbery, or theft even on Campus and in more dangerous neighborhoods. It's one of the safest big cities around and the suburban, neighborhood and city police are always on patrol and always on the lookout as all of Columbus' transportation occurs on the roads.
