Shopping, green space and commutes shape life in Glenbrook

Glenbrook appeals to commuters who want a suburban feel in Mideast Columbus, which isn’t too far from downtown. Located near a major interchange, the neighborhood makes it easy to get around the metro, plus it’s home to some shopping and dining for quick grocery runs or takeout orders after work. Green space is easy to find thanks to a local park, mature trees and nearby greenways. Local highways give residents straightforward drives to major job centers, including either of the city’s international airports. Buyers looking at different parts of Columbus may also be drawn to Glenbrook for its relatively lower home prices.

A mix of home types, with prices generally below the Columbus median

The community has a collection of subdivisions, with small shifts in vibe from one cul-de-sac or crescent to the next. Most streets are lined by sidewalks and midcentury homes, from ranch styles to bi-levels. Newer homes from the 1990s and early aughts lean toward spacious, two-story Colonial Revival and Minimal Traditional designs, typically featuring large, front-facing garages. Lots are modest, with enough room for front gardens and backyard entertainment.

Prices generally trend a bit below the city’s median, though not dramatically. Single-family homes have recently sold from the mid-$100,000s to the low $300,000s, while townhouses and condos have ranged from the low $100,000s to the high $100,000s. Duplexes have landed in the low- to mid-$200,000s. Compared with the greater metro and the U.S. overall, homes here generally spend less time on the market.

“You can buy a house for under $250,000 in this neighborhood, and sometimes under $200,000, and so that's like the sweet spot of affordable housing here in Columbus,” says Chase Vance, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker.

Many residents rent, particularly in apartment communities throughout the neighborhood. Single-family homes are occupied by both renters and owners.

What to know about school options in and around Glenbrook

Glenbrook sits along the boundary between two school districts. One is Columbus City Schools, which offers intra-district open enrollment, as well as lottery-based magnet and alternative programs. Options in this district include Easthaven Elementary School, which is right in the neighborhood, as well as Yorktown Middle School and Independence High School.

Groveport Madison Schools also serves Glenbrook. As a smaller district, Groveport Madison’s school choice is more limited, with intra-district transfers typically reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Nearby choices include Sedalia Elementary, Groveport Madison Middle School North and Groveport Madison High School. Because boundaries and enrollment options can change, families may want to confirm school assignments and transfer availability when narrowing down a home.

Highway access makes commuting around Columbus easier

Car-dependent Glenbrook borders the Interstate 270 interchange near Winchester Pike, providing nearby access to several regional highways. "You're literally in the center of all those highways," Vance says. This easy access makes getting around Columbus convenient. Distances to some key job hubs include:

  • Downtown Columbus, John Glenn Columbus International Airport and Rickenbacker International Airport — less than 10 miles away
  • New Albany — less than 20 miles away
  • Polaris and Dublin — less than 25 miles away

Local spots for fresh produce, baked goods and other good eats

The Witten Farm Market on Winchester Pike is a family-owned go-to in the neighborhood for fresh produce, flowers and pastries. For essentials and more grocery options, Big Lots and smaller, locally owned markets are also in the area. Gas stations and some popular restaurants sit along Refugee Road, including:

  • El Tacoriendo, an authentic Mexican spot known for tacos and fajitas
  • Erawan Thai, a casual Thai eatery known for curries and noodle dishes
  • Bangkok Grocery & Restaurant, a Thai and Chinese kitchen with an attached grocery store

Nearby parks and greenways offer space to play and unwind

The main community green space is Easthaven Park, a small clearing between trees with a playground and benches. For more expansive outdoor areas, residents can take a short drive to reach several parks in the Columbus Metro Parks system, such as Three Creeks. About 10 miles away, the metro park spans over 1,000 acres. Visitors can also kayak and canoe on Alum Creek or fish at Heron and Turtle ponds. One of its main draws is access to the Alum Creek and Blacklick Creek Greenways, popular for hiking, biking and dog walking. The Blacklick Creek path even links to three additional parks in the system, including Blacklick Woods.
