Leafy streets give this neighborhood its name
Walking the streets of Forest Park East shows precisely why this neighborhood's naming was not random. "I love the mature trees and the landscaping in this neighborhood," says Nancy Stecklein, a Realtor with Lotus Real Estate Advisors and former area local. "The name Forest Park is quite apropos." The area offers families and singles a tranquil place to call home without feeling disconnected from or overwhelmed by city life. Commuting all over Columbus is convenient, with Interstate 71 just to the west and Dublin Granville Road, a major east-west artery, just to the north.
All roads lead to Tamarack Circle
One of Forest Park East's more unique aspects is located almost at its center: Tamarack Circle, a roundabout with converging roads and a few businesses. "The nice thing about the roundabout is that it breaks up the traffic around the neighborhood," Stecklein says. "Everybody has to slow down around the circle, which is good." Inside Tamarack Circle is Drelyse African Restaurant, which specializes in Ghanaian Food. Gabby's Bar is right next door and is a favorite nightlife hotspot. Many other dining options surround the neighborhood. Latin American fare is prevalent, and some of the most highly rated restaurants are Taqueria Jalisco, Montecristo Salvadorean Grill & Bar and Taqueria El Buen Sazon. International markets and brand names like Kroger and Aldi are also around the neighborhood's perimeter. For retail shopping, Realtor Razat Long with e-Merge Real Estate says Easton Mall is just a 15-minute, or 7-mile drive away. Also known as Easton Town Center, the shopping complex has familiar favorites like Target, Macy's, Apple and Barnes & Noble. It's also got date night or a Saturday afternoon with friends covered with plenty of restaurants, an AMC movie theater, an escape room center and a Funny Bone comedy club.
Walking to Forest Park East’s green spaces
Forest Park East's walkability is another reason this neighborhood is attractive. "The streets are a little wider, and there are more sidewalks, as compared to neighborhoods that were built later," Stecklein says. "I used to live in Forest Park East and take regular morning walks with a friend." Those sidewalks could lead to one of four small parks. The neighborhood's eponymous park and its small playground are behind Parkmoor Elementary School. The rest of the four acres is mainly green space. Northtowne Park on Balmoral Road and Granville Park on Aqua Street have similar features. Outside the neighborhood is Woodward Park, which offers a sprawling nature preserve, six tennis courts, a well-maintained play structure and a community center with various indoor facilities and fitness programs.
Well-constructed homes draw renters, then buyers
Most homes were built in the 1960s through the 1980s. In fact, Stecklein’s father built many of the homes in Forest Park East in the 1970s. “I think you’ll find that the homes here are well-constructed,” Stecklein says. “That was a strong construction era where homes could be built affordably with the gracious overhangs and quality rooflines.” Most of the home styles are split-level. “With that era of construction, that was an affordable type of home to build. There are also two-story traditional and ranch-style homes.” The price range is anywhere between $275,000 and $350,000. Long, who has sold in the area before, adds that properties are usually “1,500 to a little over 2,000 square feet, three to four bedrooms and have two-car garages.” Renters make up a majority of residents, but a good portion of locals do own their homes. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Score of 6 versus the national average of 4. However, the Minerva Park police station is only about 1 mile to the east, so the force can quickly resolve any disturbances in the area.
Commuting downtown and to nearby jobs
Forest Park East's northern border is Ohio State Route 161, which connects to Interstates 71 and 270. Long says this convenient access connects residents to downtown in about 15 minutes or 11 miles. While some commuters might need to use these thoroughfares to get to work in the city center, Long speaks candidly about the job market. "A lot of the jobs are actually in the suburbs. People who live in Columbus prefer not to work downtown if they can. We prefer places where we can just go park." Working nearby has pros for those who travel by car and public transit, as bus stops surround the area's borders. Locals heading out of the state travel to John Glenn Columbus International Airport 10-1/2 miles south.
Students served by two school districts
A small portion of Forest Park East students are zoned for the Westerville City School District; for the majority, Columbus City School District takes the lead. Students may be zoned for various elementary schools inside the neighborhood’s borders, depending on where they live. Students could attend Parkmore Elementary School and then funnel into Woodward Park Middle School. Both schools earn a C-minus rating on Niche. Northland High School earns a C rating and serves grades nine through 12. The school offers eight school-based, dual-credit courses through a partnership with Columbus State Community College.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
