Franklin Park blends historic charm and outdoor recreation in Columbus

Franklin Park, part of Columbus ’ Near East Side, is a historic neighborhood made famous for its namesake, the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. It was built along the city’s trolley line, which is still honored by the East Market, a collection of shops and restaurants housed in a former trolley barn. Today, people seek out the neighborhood for its 19th-century homes located about 2 miles from downtown. If you’re not visiting the conservatory, you can head to Franklin Park itself for some time in the sun or for community events like the Greater Columbus Cherry Festival.

Historic homes cost higher than nearby communities

You can find homes dating back to the late 1800s. Red-brick American Foursquares, Craftsman styles and Victorian-era homes fill the neighborhood. “The houses have been refurbished, and they’ve got the original woodwork,” says Janene Parham, Realtor with Red 1 Realty, who has been working in Columbus for over 20 years. Many properties have been converted into multifamily units. New construction is harder to come by and often mimics the older architecture.

The median price of a single-family home in Franklin Park is significantly higher than the rest of Columbus, including the neighboring Olde Towne East. “I should have invested more in Franklin Park when everybody was selling, because, oh my goodness, the housing market now out there is unbelievable,” Parham says. Depending on size and condition, single- and multifamily houses typically cost between the mid-$300,000s and the high $600,000s. There are some investment properties, which can range from under $100,000 to the low $300,000s. Over half of the residents rent.

Locals spend hours at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

The sprawling Franklin Park is anchored by the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. “It’s just beautiful,” Parham says. The conservatory’s greenhouses give residents the chance to explore hundreds of plants that thrive in all sorts of climates, from tropical rainforests to arid deserts. The historic Dorothy M. Davis Showhouse was built in 1895 and features colorful horticulture designs that change with the season. Residents can grow their own crops at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company Community Garden Campus. Most of the conservatory, excluding the community garden, has an admissions fee. The monthly Community Day offers free admission to anyone with a Columbus or Franklin County ID. Other Franklin Park amenities include:

  • Picnic tables for you to enjoy lunch outside.
  • Playgrounds for kids to run around.
  • The Espy Adaptive Sports Complex, an accessible fitness center.
  • Access to the Alum Creek Trail, which, in total, is almost 25 miles long.
The park also hosts several events throughout the year. In the winter, the conservatory hosts Holiday Blooms and Conservatory Aglow, themed floral and light displays with scheduled live music and ice skating. You can visit the park in the spring for the Greater Columbus Cherry Blossom Festival, which has over 100 trees. Columbus’ Asian Festival is a cultural celebration that attracts over 100,000 people every May.

East Market vendors include local eateries like Yellow Brick Pizza

Less than a 10-minute walk from the park is the East Market in the Historic Trolley District, where you can find fresh produce and local businesses, as well as events like outdoor movies and yoga classes. Some of the vendors include:

  • Yellow Brick Pizza, a community staple with daily specials.
  • The Railhouse, the market’s flagship bar.
  • The Plant Gays, which sells house plants and handmade concrete planters.
  • Winson’s Coffee & Waffles, where the menu includes buttermilk and Liège waffles.
  • The Columbus Brewing Company Beer Hall, which has 24 beers on tap.
Franklin Park is a short walk from other Near East side neighborhoods, making it easy for residents to catch a show at the Lincoln Theatre or grab a drink at The Olde Towne Tavern. “I like to say it’s like a triangle,” Parham says. “You have Olde Towne East, Franklin Park and King-Lincoln Bronzeville.”

Commuters can drive downtown in 10 minutes

While the neighborhood is walkable, many locals drive themselves. Downtown is about 10 minutes away. There is some public transportation, with Central Ohio Transit Authority bus routes along Bryden Road and Broad Street. “Because of the parks, people may be on their bikes,” Parham says.

Students attend Columbus public and charter schools

Franklin Park is part of the Columbus City School District, which offers school choice through a lottery system and magnet programs. Columbus City Preparatory School for Girls, an all-girls public middle school, and A+ Arts Academy, a tuition-free charter school, are within walking distance of most homes.
