A diverse working-class community
Among Columbus’ western suburbs, the working-class neighborhood of Georgian Heights has appealing access to Interstate 270 — referred to regionally as The Outerbelt -- and one of the more diverse communities in Middle America. A quarter of the neighborhood’s population is Somali, and many folks of other backgrounds, including Dominican families, have made their homes in Georgian Heights for the last few decades. Georgesville Road runs through the center of the neighborhood, and along it sits restaurants, shops and other gathering spots that represent the many cultures that have established communities here. A majority of the employment for the area comes from warehouses and manufacturing facilities to the north, as well as retailers and temp agencies in the area.
A cultural suburb along Georgesville Road
“It’s more diverse than other suburbs in Columbus,” says Heather Smith, who lived in Georgian Heights for 15 years before becoming a Realtor, “It’s culturally pocketed. Many families from many places tend to settle in the same areas, and it’s just very comfortable.” The western portion of the neighborhood hosts many Somali families near the Masjid, and Dominican communities gather around the northern parts of Georgesville Road. Ranch styles, bungalows, and Cape Cods are available throughout the neighborhood from $125,000 to around $250,000. Split-levels and large ranches replace bungalows along Halsey Place on lots around a quarter acre or more. Foursquares with added garages and split-level homes cost around $250,000 to $450,000. Many homes in the area need renovations, and around a tenth are vacant. The CAP Index crime score of the neighborhood is 7 out of 10, above the national score of 4 out of 10.

Gathering and worshipping
Abubakar Asiddiq Islamic Center is just to the west of the neighborhood and is considered by its members and visitors to be a rich place of culture and architecture. It features worship spaces and gardens surrounding the building. In the southern portion of the neighborhood, locals can attend a few churches of different Christian denominations. The Westgate Baptist Church is located within the neighborhood along Clime Road. Outside the neighborhood are two other denominations: St. Stephen the Martyr for those of the Catholic faith and Evangelical Garden City Church.
From canjero to mofongo
There are also several more halal options for Islamic residents than in other areas of Columbus. Spots like Ramadan and Khyber along Sullivant Avenue and Industrial Mile are favorites on the neighborhood's edge. Many cuisines are popular in the area, thanks to its multiculturalism. El Sabor de mi Terra serves Dominican food and a sought-after mofongo during the weekend, while La Super Torta dishes up Mexican food throughout the day. Locals can head to Hadhwanag and Marhaba for Somali food, Khyber for Indian, and Los Galapagos for Ecuadorian. And of course, locals can drive through one of the many fast-food chains, like Taco Bell and Tim Hortons, along Georgesville Road. The area has liquor stores and is the home of Hollywood Casino, a popular destination for residents across Columbus with its gambling, bars and restaurants. Just south of the neighborhood, Georgesville Square has a Kroger for groceries, a Lowe’s and a Walmart.

A short drive around the Outerbelt
I-270 borders the neighborhood and serves as the most directway into downtown Columbus, just under 10 miles away. The small public Bolton Field Airport is also nearby, but it doesn’t add any extra noticeable noise. “It’s really quiet. In the years I was there, I couldn’t tell you I ever saw a plane leave,” says Smith, “Though it does have the cheapest gas you can get in Columbus over there. I go there just for that.”
