A tight-knit community in west Columbus
Neighbors in Holly Hill have a strong sense of community, and it’s been that way since houses were built there in the 1950s and ‘60s. “I’ve got people waiting to buy in that neighborhood,” says Amy Johnson, a Realtor with Signature Real Estate. “There’s a lot of people living there who are loyal to the area.” Approachable real estate prices for renovated homes have also increased the neighborhood’s desirability.
Renovated midcentury homes
Nearly half of the residences in Holly Hill are single-family homes, and the rest are apartments. Houses are generally one-story Cape Cod and ranch-style homes, reflecting their midcentury construction dates. “The home styles are true to the era in which they were built with ranch-style and one-story homes over a full basement,” says Johnson. Driveways are common, as are carports and the occasional attached garage. Eighth-acre lots are standard, though corner properties can have as much as a quarter-acre.
Prices range from the low $100,000s to the mid-$200,000s, depending on renovations and overall quality. A small subdivision of newer homes built in the 2020s has Contemporary homes priced between the low and high $500,000s.
Dense foliage at Big Run Park
At 300 acres, Big Run Park is one of the largest public parks in west Columbus. It has over three miles of trails, playground equipment and dense pockets of trees and foliage. The Big Run Sports Complex has multiple indoor basketball courts for rental or random pick-up games. Big Run Park is also the home of Derby Hill, the Columbus Soap Box Derby site. Open to riders between the ages of 7 and 20, races are held at the park multiple times a year and culminate in the Columbus Championship.
Public schools at arm's reach
Eakin Elementary School and Wedgewood Middle School are inside Holly Hill’s boundaries, and both receive a C-minus from Niche. Briggs High School, which specializes in the arts and sends its show choir to perform at area events, has a C-minus. The neighborhood is also home to Imagine Academy at Sullivant, a charter elementary school with a D from Niche.
Seafood specialties at El Jaliciense
El Jaliciense is a laid-back Mexican restaurant with an extensive menu specializing in seafood dishes like Caldo de Siete Mares, Seven Seas Soup, made from clams, shrimp and squid. As the name suggests, Royal Burger focuses on handcrafted burgers, fries and other backyard grill favorites. Sullivant Avenue has a selection of retail shopping and franchise restaurants. A Kroger grocery store is two miles north.
Seven miles from downtown
Access to Interstate 270 and Route 40 allows for a 7-mile commute to downtown Columbus or a 14-mile trip to John Glenn Columbus International Airport. The OhioHealth Doctors Hospital is 3 miles northwest, and Hollywood Casino Columbus is less than 3 miles north. The Central Ohio Transit Authority provides a public bus service with stops on Sullivant Ave and Kingsford Road.
Important to know
The CAP Crime Index gives Holly Hill an overall score of 7/10, compared to the national average of 4/10. Violent crimes receive scores as high as 8/10, while property crimes hit 9/10.
