Off-campus living beside the State Fair
With tree-lined streets and large homes near Ohio State University’s main campus, Indianola Terrace is a center of off-campus relaxation. A suburban neighborhood with urban amenities, it positions students and homeowners alike just a few miles from Downtown Columbus. Annually, the neighborhood is also at the heart of the city’s action, as the Ohio State Fairgrounds run along Indianola Terrace’s eastern border.
Front-row at the fairgrounds
The Ohio Fairgrounds and the Ohio Expo Center & State Fair consistently rank in the top 20 attractions in Columbus. With funnel cakes, Ferris wheels, funhouse mirrors and more, the Ohio State Fair is one of the largest in the United States. It is typically held for around two weeks in July and August every year, drawing nearly 1 million people to the festivities. On non-fair days, residents like to visit small city parks nearby. Indianola Park 1/2 a mile south has a medium-sized playground with a waterproof/mudproof base, stone picnic tables and sculptures. Weinland Park, just a bit further south, has similar amenities. Zeke Liston, Realtor with ReafCo who has sold homes in the area before, says, “There’s also a couple of community gardens nearby. Those are definitely an appeal for people moving in the area.” About 1/2 a mile south is 4th Street Farms and IE Gardens in Weinland Park. Gardeners are allowed to garden whenever they’d like and harvest whatever they’d like. The community comes together to keep these gardens full, ensuring everyone can reap the benefits of these shared spaces.
Historic high school gets makeover
Indianola Terrace is home to Indianola Junior High, which is notable for being the first junior high school in the United States. Built in 1929 by architect Howard Dwight Smith, who also designed Ohio Stadium, the school is on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s currently being renovated by Metro Schools, an independent academy specializing in science, technology, engineering and math, so students attend Whetstone High School, which has a C-plus Niche rating and an academy for the performing arts. Students get their primary education at Weinland Park Elementary School, which had a C-minus on Niche, followed by Dominion Middle School, which has a C. The Ohio State University is 2 miles from Indianola Terrace. It earns an A-plus score on Niche and is considered the No. 1 college in Ohio.
Students and homeowners live side by side
Wide streets, tree canopies and spacious homes with large front porches and second-story balconies are common sights in the area. Liston says many of the area's stately brick mansions and restored Craftsman-style bungalows were built in the early 1900s to the 1940s. Liston also says, “Although the area is close to campus, there’s a good amount of owner-occupants.” However, multifamily dwellings, town houses and apartment complexes are notable in the community. “There’s a very dense population of student housing,” says Matthew Brown, Realtor at Brown Multifamily Advisors. Across the board, prices range from $375,000 to $600,000 for single-family and multifamily listings.
Pool competitions at Suzie-Cue
For dinner, drinks and a casual round of pool, people look no further than North 4th Street. However, the competitive at heart head to Suzi-Cue Pool Hall, the only pool hall near campus. Locals can join leagues with some of the best players in the area or practice strategy with friends. For brunch or a draft beer, people grab a table on the patio at Fourth Street Taproom & Kitchen, a pub with weekly karaoke and trivia nights. Oldfield’s North Fourth Tavern is the area’s college dive bar, serving a huge selection of local and imported brews. Locals are within 1 mile of a Target Grocery and a Kroger.
Getting to downtown and emergency services
U.S. State Route 23, lined with Central Ohio Transit Authority bus stops, creates the neighborhood's western border. Commuters are 1 mile from Interstate 71, making the 3-mile drive to Downtown Columbus quick. Indianola Terrace is less than 6 miles from John Glenn Columbus International Airport. In an emergency, residents are served by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, which is 1-1/2 miles west and provides primary, urgent and emergency care.
Crime
Indianola Terrace has a CAP Index Crime Score of 8 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. The overall crime score is driven by higher-than-average property crime rather than violent crime. The Columbus Division of Police and its Strategic Response Bureau offers many resources to citizens to prevent property crime, from car break-ins to burglary.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

The homeless population is horrible. They sit all around campus asking for handouts, when I myself don't have money to go and buy groceries. Tons of sports, Buckeye football, the Blue Jackets, the Columbus Crew, and more which is awesome. The good makes up for the bad. Any urban area that I choose to live in will have drunken people 24/7, the homeless, and high rent for terrible properties.
