Salem Village
Suburban Neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio
Franklin County 43229
Residential streets branching off Sinclair Road
Sidewalks line the thoroughfares in Salem Village and connect to the occasional side street, and a layer of mature trees shields properties surrounding Poste Lake. With single-family homes comprising less than 20% of the neighborhood, Salem Village maintains an urban feel with apartments and industrial buildings between houses along Sinclair Road. Most homes were constructed from the mid-1950s to early 1970s, and because of its long-established nature, the community doesn’t have vacant lots for new construction. Split-level and ranch-style houses typically range from 900 square feet to over 1,400 square feet, and prices fall below the average for Columbus. Three-bedroom homes start at around $200,000, and four-bedroom homes reach around $300,000.A staple pizza joint and easy access to Clintonville
Though there aren’t many restaurants in the neighborhood, The Pizza House is one option that’s been serving Columbus-style pizza to the Salem Village community since 1961. Bordered by Woodward Park, the neighborhood also benefits from easy access to such spots as Ranchero Kitchen and Lawshea’s. By driving a few miles west on Morse Road, residents can pick up groceries at Kroger in Clintonville, but Polaris Fashion Place and Polaris Towne Center are about 5 miles north, expanding shopping opportunities to national retailers.Columbus City Schools and Bishop Watterson High
Students can attend Columbus City Schools, starting with Salem Elementary, which earns a C-minus from Niche. From here, students can transition to Dominion Middle, a C-graded school, and graduate from Whetstone High, a C-plus school with a performing arts academy and college-level courses in psychology and history. Private school options are also within a 5-mile drive, including Bishop Watterson High, a Catholic school ranking among the top five in the Columbus area on Niche. From private lake access to public green spaces near I-71
Though a gaze at the map might make Poste Lake seem like a neighborhood amenity, only homeowners with private shore and dock access can boat across the glassy water or cast a fishing line. Chaseland Park, however, is a public space in Salem Village with a playground and open fields. “Even people who live near there aren’t aware of it,” Merriman says. “The reason I do is I bought and renovated a house that backed up to that park, and I thought it was so cool to have access to it.” The walking paths and tennis courts at Woodward Park are also about 3 miles away, expanding opportunities to get outside. During the winter, Skate Zone 71 draws in locals looking for a place to stay warm — but the facility is open year-round. As the name suggests, the roller rink borders Interstate 71 and hosts events like themed skates and arcade nights.Commuter-friendly routes to the heart of the capital
Locals can reach Clintonville in 3 miles by heading west on Morse Road or the amenities of Woodward Park by heading a similar distance east. The Central Ohio Transit Authority offers a direct bus route into downtown Columbus, but residents can also drive 10 miles down Interstate 71 to get there. For trips outside Ohio, John Glenn International Airport is just over 10 miles southeast, right off Interstate 670.
