Slate Hill is a family-friendly neighborhood with highly rated schools

Slate Hill draws people in because it's close to Polaris, one of Columbus ’ most popular shopping districts. But residents know it as a family-focused neighborhood with a strong sense of community. During the warmer months, you can see kids walking to highly rated Worthington schools or running around the small Sancus Park. If they’re not exploring the many shops at Polaris Fashion Place, residents can be soaking up the sun at nearby metro parks, or enjoying the cultural attractions and dining scene in downtown Columbus, about 15 miles away.

Townhouses and condos attract homeowners and renters

The market in Slate Hill largely consists of townhouses and condos built in the 1980s, attracting a mix of homeowners and renters. Most units are connected, but there are some free-standing split-level and bi-level condos. Monthly HOA fees are usually between $150 and $250. “They plow for you, they take the trash. They do certain things that you as a homeowner don’t have to do yourself,” says Sarah Najjar, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, who owns some rental properties in the neighborhood. Prices generally range from the mid-$100,000s to the low $300,000s. Most residents rent. “It’s cheaper than renting an apartment [in Polaris], honestly,” Najjar says.

The few single-family homes in the neighborhood are New Traditional-style houses built after 2000. Because the inventory is so small, these properties rarely go on the market. Recent listings were priced at the high $400,000s.

Locals feel like Slate Hill is a family-oriented community

Slate Hill is primarily residential, and it’s common to see kids walking to the local elementary school in the morning. According to Najjar, it feels like a family-oriented area. “It’s just a very cute little place for you to end up,” Najjar says. “You have a lot of neighbors, so you have eyes everywhere.” There are sidewalks along most roads, leading to the highly rated Slate Hill Elementary School and nearby parks. “It’s very nice during the summer because you can walk everywhere,” Najjar says.

Highly rated schools include Thomas Worthington High School

The neighborhood is part of the highly rated Worthington City School District, which receives better ratings than the Columbus City School District. This is partially because of highly rated schools like Thomas Worthington High School, which offers a two-part STEM pathway: the Freshman STEM Team and the Pre-Engineering Pathway. School choice is available through intradistrict open enrollment.
