In the early 1960s, a new subdivision was planned north of Ohio Dominican University off Sunbury Road. “It was a neighborhood that African Americans primarily built because that was the available land. They built nice homes,” says Henry Bland, a Realtor with H.C. Bland Realty. The subdivision of Teakwood Heights and the neighborhood of Teakwood was born. The subdivision of Teakwood Heights and the neighborhood of Teakwood may be small, but there’s a sense of loyalty and pride among the people who live there. “There are those who have lived in that subdivision since the beginning, and there are even some instances where people pass the house on to the next generation as an inheritance,” Bland says.
Home styles are eclectic and often need renovation
“When that subdivision was constructed, it was a hodgepodge of architectural styles because the homes were all custom built,” Bland says. There are primarily two-story homes, some with a modern touch, split-level, and some ranch-style. They were built mainly in the 1960s, with some in the early '70s. Although some homes show their age and need renovation, most are in good shape. “The houses in that era were built with better materials. Hardwood floors, for example, were durable. They didn’t skimp on materials because they were cheap back then,” Bland says. The square footage is between 1,500 and 2,300 square feet, and the price range is between $220,000 and $300,000.

Brentnell Community Center offers sporting facilities and gaming rooms
One of the area's staples is the Brentnell Community Center on Brentnell Avenue. It opened as a haven to provide activities for people in the surrounding area. There’s a fitness room, a place to do arts and crafts and even shoot pool. Brentnell Community Center is a periodic stop for a mobile fresh produce market that rotates among Columbus area community centers from April through December. The produce is available for eligible families. Alongside the community center is a playground, and behind the facility are tennis courts and a basketball court. Still further out is ample green space that can be used for a soccer or neighborhood football game.
