Keeping it rural

Outside of Sunbury, about 25 miles northeast of Columbus, is what’s now known as Trenton Township. It was initially called Sunbury Township when it formed in the early 1800s and is significantly smaller than it once was. Today, Trenton Township maintains its rural characteristics with homes on large plots of land. Twenty minutes away in New Albany, Intel is constructing two computer chip factories that will employ about 3,000 people when it opens in 2025. “Intel is coming, but to get the townships to grow, the process of developing land needs to be done quicker with few complications,” says Jeff Gongwer, a Broker/Owner with RE/MAX Affiliates with almost 30 years of real estate experience. He is also a resident of Porter Township, just to the north of Trenton Township. “Delaware County is the fastest growing area in Ohio. Intel will bring people from all over the country, and I’m not sure where they will all live.”

New housing development

Off Del County Road 605, a new subdivision has started north of the Rattlesnake Ridge Golf Club. Modern architecture styles include a 5-level split along with two-story homes. There are more plots of land available to build. “There has been growth in the area, and that’s due to people moving out to the smaller townships outside of Sunbury, like Trenton Township and Porter to the north,” Gongwer says. Older Cape Cod, ranch-style and log homes are on at least 5 acres, with a two-car garage and at least a partial basement. Price ranges are from $300,000 to $600,000, with more for homes built within the past 30 years with acreage. Ross Road is a main north/south thoroughfare where older homes with many acres can be seen on both sides.

County transportation

While the Central Ohio Transportation Authority's, or COTA's, buses only make it a little past the Interstate 270 beltway, the need for public transportation is met with Delaware County Transit. It’s an on-demand ride service that can be scheduled up to two weeks in advance. The bus can take riders anywhere within the county. That includes OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital, 17 miles away in Delaware.

Just minutes from the city of Sunbury

On the eastern side of Sunbury are unique, locally owned restaurants, including Firehouse Tavern on South Vernon Street. The inside is themed to honor firefighters as well as the military. Everything from their wing sauce to soups and salad dressing is made from scratch. They have plenty of TVs to catch the game and many different beers on tap. Grocery items can be found at Kroger, with an entrance off Cherry Street, with an on-site fuel center and a Starbucks inside.
