Tranquil streets and a highly rated school system await homebuyers when they head for the hills — Western Hills, that is. According to Candance DeFrancisco, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, a significant advantage to living in Western Hills is that “you’re living in the Worthington School District but paying Columbus taxes.” The district is one of the most desirable in the Columbus area, so residents get all the perks of high-quality education while receiving the benefits of Columbus tax breaks.
Furry friends visit tree-lined streets
“The price range for homes is between $250,000 and $365,000,” DeFrancisco says. Homes are usually between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet and come in New Traditional, split-level and ranch styles. “With the demand here, houses are usually sold within a week when they go on the market. The affordability makes it ideal for first-time home buyers,” DeFrancisco says. Neighborhood streets are visibly verdant, and with such greenery comes along some furry friends. Thomas Hamrick, Realtor at Keller Williams Consultants Realty and Worthington area expert, shares that locals are all too acquainted with possums, raccoons, rabbits and deer that run around the neighborhood. “The city has done a lot to mitigate the concern around the deer and Lyme disease, so there’s no harm in their presence, but there’s a lot of them since they have no natural predators here. A friend of mine always finds them sleeping in her backyard or eating her tulips. But it is cool to see them around when on a walk really early in the morning or around dusk.”
Education within walking distance
Students are zoned for either Liberty Elementary School or Granby Elementary School, which are both just south of the neighborhood. Next door to Granby is McCord Middle School, where students can connect with their peers through various clubs and activities, like peer mentoring and community involvement. Worthington Kilbourne High School receives Western Hills high schoolers and has an extensive athletics program, ranging from lacrosse and ice hockey to bowling and water polo. All four schools earn an A-minus rating on Niche.
Mountain bike enthusiasts visit Gators Bike Park
Hamrick shares that while Worthington is very green because of all the neighborhood’s landscaping, there aren’t many central green spaces nearby. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any parks for residents. A favorite is Gators Bike Park near McCord Middle School and Granby Elementary School. The park was formed from a community volunteer effort in 2013 to enhance the health and wellness of kids. Obstacles and trails at the park are meant to hone kids’ mountain biking skills, and the park has scheduled practices and tutorials throughout the summer to support that growth. Around the corner are some smaller neighborhood parks, like Woodbridge Green Park and Hard Road Park, which feature wide open fields and limited sports courts. Western Hills is also 3 miles from Worthington Hills Country Club, which Hamrick says is “one of the more inexpensive country clubs in Worthington. If you live anywhere in Worthington, you can join as a member, and they have multiple types of memberships at different price levels.” For a family-friendly adventure day, locals are under 5 miles from the highly rated Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Visitors walk with the kangaroos, touch sea creatures at the tidal pool and enjoy a boat ride around Dinosaur Island.
Swenson’s Drive-In, home of the Galley Boy
Locals are just 2 miles away from shopping and dining. To the west along Sawmill Road is a Kroger Marketplace and a Walmart Supercenter that supply residents with groceries and everyday essentials. Sunny Street Café is the go-to spot to start commuters’ mornings or enjoy a Sunday brunch with family and friends. Lunchtime cravings are filled at Swenson’s Drive-In, home of the Galley Boy, the self-proclaimed best cheeseburger in America. The eatery has been a local fixture for almost 100 years and has drawn in generations with its juicy hamburgers, crisp-cut fries and creamy milkshakes. 101 Beer Kitchen gastropub brings in flocks of people during happy hour, enticed by the restaurant’s extensive draft beer list and laidback, semi-seasonal New American menu. A bit closer to home is The Filling Station Grill and Bar on Smoky Row Road, which is most popular on Ohio State game days.
Follow the river to Ohio State University
Residents are located north of Interstate 270 and west of Ohio State Route 315, which follows the Olentangy River and leads to The Ohio State University campus. Commuters can take I-270 or 315 to get into Downtown Columbus, but public transit stops are also available along Smokey Row Road. For long-distance travel, John Glenn Columbus International Airport is under 17 miles southeast.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
