Woodward Park is built on consistency, connection and quiet charm
Stability is key in Woodward Park, a cozy suburb 9 miles from downtown Columbus via Interstate 171 South. “I haven’t seen a lot of major ups or downs in the housing market here,” says Mike Dippold, Realtor with Fathom Realty Ohio and Woodward Park resident. “The trend is positive. We don’t hit home runs in this neighborhood, but we hit a lot of singles.” Dippold adds that he thought he would move after his kids left the school system, but Woodward Park is home, and he’s not going anywhere. Dippold credits Woodward Park's stable, connected community for his family’s long history here. “We have neighbors that we’ve been around now for 30 years. Just around our neighborhood, we’ll do a Christmas party or a summer cookout among the 10 families close to us. I don’t know how many neighborhoods can say that.”
Most homes in the area are midcentury
“Pretty much every house here was built between 1965 and 1970,” Dippold says. You’ll find mainly split-level Traditional and ranch-style homes: a 2,100 square-foot, four-bedroom, three-bath split-level will run you about $315,000; while a three-bed, two-bath ranch-style home just under 1,500 square feet is about $235,000. Homes stay on the market here for an average of 34 days.
Northland High is known for college prep and performing arts
Kids in Woodward Park can attend Columbus City district schools like the neighborhood's own Valley Forge Elementary and Woodward Park Middle School, both rated a C-minus by Niche. Just north, Northland High School (which claims country singer Dwight Yoakam as an alum) is rated an overall C but earns higher marks for its college prep and popular activities like theater and marching band.
Public parks have playgrounds, trails and sports facilities
At the north end of the neighborhood is its namesake, the17-acre Woodward Park. The crack of a baseball bat and the volley on the tennis courts can be heard well into the night, as both facilities are lighted. For the kids, there’s a Columbus Blue Jackets-themed playground built by members of the team, as well City of Columbus parks and rec employees; play equipment includes a puck-studded climbing wall and hockey-stick details. Meander along pathways, dirt and boardwalk trails in the 33-acre Woodward Nature Preserve, exploring flowers, plants and wildlife under a dense canopy of trees. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera; you could have close encounters with a fox, and some have even seen a hawk fly overhead. The Woodward Park Recreation Center is at the park’s eastern end, where you can shoot some hoops inside or join a pickleball league.
Restaurants include pizza, Vietnamese and hoagies
Just south, grocery options include Kroger and the sprawling Saraga International Grocery. Right in the neighborhood at friendly, locally owned Grandad’s Pizza, the classic thin-crust pizza is sliced Columbus-style into squares. For Vietnamese pho soup that’s out of this world, head to Huong Vietnamese Restaurant, where the portions are massive and the service superb. Next door is family-owned Yogi’s Hoagies, where the menu includes pasta, French bread pizzas and 8- or 16-inch sub-style sandwiches; the Eastern Eddie, a classic Italian hoagie with salami, ham and cheese, is only made cold here, so locals known not to ask them to heat it up.
Locals keep cool at the Northland Swim Club
During hot summer days, you can head to the pool at the Northland Swim Club, started in the 1960s for the community, by the community. The facility and its upkeep run on the strength of the neighborhood. Each spring, the call goes out for volunteers to help beautify the pool for the upcoming season. Summer events here include bingo, rousing card games and corn hole competitions, and each season there are a couple of family movie nights.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
