Monaco’s suburban landscape, close to commerce
About 4 miles north of Commerce City, Monaco is a residential area between railroad tracks to both its east and west. Many homes are a short walk from the area’s surrounding retail and restaurants. Multiple commuter routes make it easy to access the larger Denver metro area. “It’s a good neighborhood. Pretty peaceful and quiet. It’s close to Reunion and the newer side of Commerce City,” says Realtor Omar Robles with Keller Williams Realty, who has about 5 years of experience.
Mid-century single-family homes and townhouses
Homes in Monaco are lined along gridded residential streets with mature trees and have small front yards that are sometimes fenced in. Some properties have driveways, though street parking is allowed. Minimal traditional, single-story homes built in the 1940s and 1950s is the common architecture, alongside ranch-style homes. Prices range from $325,000 to $500,000. There are also a handful of split-level homes with brick and vinyl exteriors that have a similar cost. “A lot of the older homes in the neighborhood are being remodeled on the inside,” Robles says. Contemporary townhouses built in the 1980s go for $225,000 to $325,000.
Shops and local restaurants on the surrounding main roads
While Monaco is primarily residential, the surrounding main roads are lined with shops and restaurants. Mi Pueblo Market is an international grocery store on 80th Avenue. The commercial corridor along Highway 2 starts at the 72nd Avenue intersection, where there are convenience stores, used car dealerships and other small businesses. Tacos Sabor Chilango is one of many authentic Mexican restaurants in the area, and Tasty Donuts is next door. Farther north, there’s a Dollar General and Big Daddy Mexican Food.
Central Commerce City is about 4 miles south with King Soopers and a Walmart Supercenter. Fast-food options include KFC, Wendy’s and Pizza Hut.
Traveling around Monaco by foot, bus or car
Monaco’s dense streets and sidewalks lend to a semi-walkable community. “There are a couple of stores nearby, but mostly you have to drive around,” Robles says. Commuters with vehicles can access Colorado state Highway 2 and use it to travel north or south, with downtown Denver about 11 miles away. U.S. Route 6, known as Vasquez Boulevard, is less than a mile west. Additionally, Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus services have stops along Kearney Street, Monaco Street, and 72nd and 76th avenues. The Denver International Airport is roughly 17 miles east.
Neighborhood parks and a nearby wildlife refuge
Urquidez Centennial Park brings outdoor recreation to the neighborhood with its playground, basketball court and grassy field. There are also a handful of green spaces nearby, such as Los Valientes Park, with its own playground and walking paths. About 4 miles away, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge has over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails carved through its prairie landscape. The Visitor Center showcases various exhibits on the local wildlife, and a handful of lakes allow fishing. The 11-mile Wildlife Tour is a vehicle tour that takes visitors through the area.
